Kevin Ryan has been spiritually inspired by The Rupal Carpet or the Friendship Carpet. Kevin Ryan tells us about his divine art...The Rupal Carpet was made by a group of women in Gujarat in India: "The idea was an economic project both ways – making carpets to provide essential money for the village they lived in, to develop education and water. | | The Rupal Carpet or The Friendship Carpe |
Here it was for artists who were unemployed to work with the carpet to develop projects in schools, so it's had a very active life." It was created as a collaboration between people in India and people in the UK: "The whole thing embodies the relationship between people of Gujarati origin in Loughborough and all the contacts that local people have made. The design was actually sung out by someone to the women who were making it and they're knotting and cutting as he sings. So it's really a carpet that's been sung into existence. It is full of symbols that are about friendship, are about things that are special to people here and in India and things we hold in common." |
