The temptation of cooling down in water is endangering the lives of children around the county. They have been jumping into Leicestershire's locks and canals in a bid to stay cool in the warm weather. Youngsters are opting to jump into local rivers and lakes, as the cost of going to swimming baths is too much for them. They are ignoring all the dangers and even missing school to play about in the murky waters. Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) stated that in the last heatwave, there were about two deaths a day, due to people swimming in open water. There are laws to stop people swimming in canals, protecting boat traffic but there are no laws about general rivers and lakes. Adrian Lane, Riverside manager for City Council is urging children to moderate their behaviour. He said: "We try to make them as safe as possible so they go home in one piece. But we are trying to get them to discourage doing the most dangerous of activities they are up to."
