The BBC’s Springwatch is not just about celebrating Britain’s wildlife it is also about making the world a much pleasanter place for people too. Over the next few years we will be working with our listeners and viewers to create "Breathing Places" – green refuges where we can all go to escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Most of us have got somewhere of our own where we can grow things. Whether you have a spacious garden, an allotment, cramped backyard or a pot on the windowsill we all have a bit of space for some greenery. But if your spider plant has produced offspring, your bamboo is running riot or you have grown too many bedding plants or vegetable seedlings this year what do you do with your surplus stock? Instead of bunging them in the bin or consigning them to the compost bin why not use them to take part in our Great Garden Giveaway? We want you to give away your plants to other people in your neighbourhood. Here’s how the scheme works When you have got a few plants together, put them in a box by your front gate. Print off the Great Garden Giveaway poster here... There’s a blank space on the poster to write your own words – you might say “Help Yourself” or “Please Take One” or whatever you like. If you have not labeled the plants you could say what they were or use the space to add some notes about how to grow them on. Words of advice like “grows to 30cms” or “spreads like wildfire” are always useful. | | Seven-spot ladybird |
NB: Please do not use this scheme to give away plants that are noxious or dangerously poisonous. Alternatively, you might want to use your poster to invite donations for your local community garden or school vegetable patch. Use your imagination! The box could go in a pub, village hall, church or doctors’ surgery as well as outside your house or allotment. Geraniums or gerberas, tomatoes or tagetes, hostas or hydrangeas. If you’ve a plant to spare – pass it on to someone else who would find it useful – and help make our world a greener place. |
