Where I Live - Pudsey

Parrots, pudding and cricket... One resident of Pudsey tells us all about what makes his town special.

The 1087-1088 Domesday Book recorded my township, Pudsey.

The glasshouse in Pudsey Park

The glasshouse in Pudsey Park

In Pudsey's early days, it was renowned for its wool weaving but one of its claims to fame was born from... corn. In 1846, Pudseyites celebrated the repeal of the corn laws with the 1000lbs Pudsey Pudding!

In the last century Pudsey was annexed with Calverley and Farsley, before being swallowed up by Leeds. Today, Pudsey is famed for its cricket, with greats such as Sir Len Hutton.

Pudsey is home to its very own out of town shopping centre with the only M&S for miles.

At its heart, lays Pudsey park with: a mini-zoo; aviary; bowling green; aquarium; greenhouse and playground.

Pudsey Bear

Pudsey Bear

Where I live, at the southern boundary, lays Fulneck. A beautiful, picturesque and historic Moravian settlement. Bohemian settlers reached Fulneck in the 1700s, which borders on Pudsey's very own countryside (now greenbelt!)

Pudsey architecture had never been something I had ever considered before. But, just look up at the buildings in the centre of Pudsey. The kind of building which is never made today.

Pudsey's main claims to fame are being Pudsey Bear's birthplace, and a historic cricketing town at the heart of Great Britain. There's no place like home.

The Pudseyite's motto: 'Be Just and Fear Not.'

Lorraine and Jenny in Lady Grande are both lovely, gorgeous, glamourous ladies. They always have time for a chat. Also Julie and her mum and Jean in Olde Boothes tea rooms - lovely ladies and Julie's mum makes yorkshire tea loaf to die for!!!

Although I have never actually lived in Pudsey, my Mothers family all came from that area, all descendants from the Milners who go back to well into the 1600's if not earlier. I do remember my visits there back in the 1950's before emigrating to Australia. If you remember a place so well after 50 years you know it has a place in your heart.

Mike Lumby - Flint, North Wales
My great-grandfather, Frederick Lumby, was born in Pudsey in 1841. He moved to Holywell, Flintshire around about 1871, and married Mary Ann Carroll in 1872. Their marriage certificate records his father's forename as James. I haven't been able to find any information about James in any of the census records or in the births marriages and deaths listings. Does anyone have any information on James or his family, please? He may have been born about 1815.

Julia Storey (Nee Smith)
I have lived in Pudsey most of my life, found it a great place to be and I have lovely childhood memories of people and places. I lived on Ederoyds and went to Waterloo & Primrose Hill Schools. I can remember Ian Ellam from school. My brother Gerald Smith would like to trace David Fish from Sunnyridge who was his friend at school.

Having lived within Pudsey and its surroundings i can honestly say that it is one of the most beautiful places left in the UK.I have lived in other places within the UK and am yet to find a place with as much classical beauty that still in keeps with its natural history. Many have been destroyed by the large cities engulfing them but Pudsey still stands strong.I'm proud to say that i'm from pudsey!

I left Pudsey about forty five years ago and have basically lived in Sydney Australia ever since . I still remember growing up in Pudsey and visiting Pudsey Park both for the kids playground and the birds that used to be on show there. Also the great walks all around Pudsey especially walking from Fulneck to Tong on a Sunday Morning.Unfortuantely all my family and school friends have for whatever reason moved on so I really have no direct connection with the Town anymore. However, when ever I get over to England I round my old school mates up so we can a day or so going on the walk we use to take. As Carl Stevens said it still a great place with great People.

elizabeth sheard
all our summer holidays were spent in Pudsey Park - on the umberella, steam roller, the huge slide and the shelters, and in fulneck valley.Even though i now live in oakwood, Leeds I still love coming back to Pudsey when I visit my Dad in Radcliffe Lane.

PUDSEY is great, I have moved out but its my home and always will be, my friends and family still reside there so I always have a reason to go back and visit and re discover the places I went as a child

melvyn brodie
We moved to Australia 35 years ago but still call Pudsey home! We look forward to our trips back - nowt much has changed, it's still not Leeds but near enough for your needs. I know all our families there are glad they live there, so don't be too quick to run the place down. Don't get like over here - massive shopping centres everywhere, keep the centre as it is - a small market town

Bev
I live in Pudsey and its a great place to live, but the town centre is dying in its feet & badly in need of investment (Mainly thanks to the Owlcotes centre nearby). Perhaps Asda & M&S with their profits could help out the people of Pudsey by putting back in to the community that has suffered since they came?

Nigel Cromack
I have lived in Pudsey all my life and so to have my family. In fact one of my family used to own a lot of houses in Pudsey hence Cromack View in Pudsey and Clara Street and Francis Street in Farsley. I am also the proud manager of one of the best girls teams in West Yorkshire namely Pudsey Juniors Girls U16s who have only lost 1 game in the last 5 years. Funnily enough when I was a boy I used to play for Pudsey Juniors myself.
