Capturing images of Chapeltown, budding photographers, Justin, Luke and Jahmal have been showing what life is like in LS7. Their work is being featured in a touring exhibition before taking up permanent residence at Yes Cyber internet cafe.

If you've looked through the tinted glass of Yes Cyber on Chapeltown Road recently you may have seen a group of students taking and downloading digital photographs of the area.

As part of the BBC Community Academy, Justin, Luke and Jahmal enrolled for OCN accredited Photography and Photoshop course, hoping their pictures will tell Chapeltown's real story instead of people assuming they know what LS7 is like.

Justin Archibald says the course was great fun: "I always enjoyed taking pictures with my mothers camera when I was young, so when a random passing at Yes Cyber led to an introduction to digital photography I considered it fate and proceeded to attend the course.

"I am a strong believer that a well taken picture can tell a story, and wanted to attain some professional knowledge in achieving that standard."

Luke Kenny works part-time at a cocktail bar in Chapel Allerton while producing his own beats and MC-ing. On the course Luke took several pictures of BMW's at the huge garage at the Scott Hall Junction: "People don't think of a BMW garage being in Chapeltown, but it is. There's a lot more to Chapeltown that people think.

"I enjoy learning new things but I didn't expect to learn so much in such a short time. I learnt how to crop and manipulate pictures. This was my favourite part of the course."

Jahmal Pinder, an up and coming musician who has been MC-ing for about four years and started producing eight months ago. Jahmal says the course was a real eye-opener into the world of photography: "The course really teaches you about your surroundings and how light and darkness can affect your images.

"I know a few local photographers and they showed me a little bit, but I learnt a lot about how to transform an image from coming on the course. I really enjoyed it."

The exhibition 'Capturing Chapeltown' will be touring Leeds in early September before settling at its permanent home at the 'Yes Cyber' Cafe in Chapeltown.
