Rose, Steve, Ann, and Danny took part in a digital photography course at The Vale, a community centre in Hunslet which provides support for people with mental health issues.
Working with the All_2gether now team the group took the photographs as part of the OCN accredited Digital Photography and Photoshop course. One of the members Daniel Yardley says he had never done much photography before but signed up because he wanted to try something new: "I attempted the course because I wanted to try something different. I've done a fair bit of drawing and painting in the past and have always enjoyed creating images." Ann Riley didn't know very much about photography either but was interested in learning more: "I feel it's a good way of expressing your self and putting points across to other people."
The group have put together an exhibition which is hoping to tour south Leeds in early 2006. Called 'The Road to Recovery' it hopes to confront the stereotypes of people who attend day centres. Rose Walker says she had enjoyed the course very much, especially working with digital cameras: "I enrolled because I've been interested in snapping photographs since I was bought my first camera when I was twelve. I loved taking pictures of Leeds market." Steve Pritchard took the image at the top of the page, entitled 'Peaceful Hands, which was exhibited at Leeds Met University as part of the Together for Peace - digital media competition.
Steve says he decided to take the course because although he knows about photography in general he really wanted to learn about digital photography: "This aspect of photography has fascinated me over the last few years." "I had never used a digital camera before this course but now I feel much more efficient and confident in using one." |
