Teaching Italian - Language notes - Io, tu, lei ...

Since the ending of the verb is enough to tell us who is doing something, "I, you, she, he, we, they" are used in Italian far less often than in English.

io
I
tu
you
lui
he
lei
she, you formal
noi
we
voi
you more than one
loro
they

When they are used, it tends to be for emphasis or contrast.

- Io gioco a golf perché lo trovo rilassante.
- E io lo trovo divertente.
- I play golf because I find it relaxing.
- And I find it fun.
