News imageThe Fourvière Basilica

One of the most noticeable landmarks in Lyon is the Fourvière Basilica, situated on the hill that dominates the city. The glistening, clean-cut lines of the white marble monument are visible from all parts of the city.

The basilica's architectural style has attracted both criticism and praise but it is unquestionably the symbol of Lyon. Built on the site of a 12th-century chapel after the Franco-Prussian war, it fulfilled a vow, made by the people of Lyon, to build a church if their city were spared from the conflict.

It is a remarkable combination of Roman, Gothic and Byzantine styles and the top of the basilica affords a magnificent panoramic view of Lyon and its surroundings. The interior is an ornate mixture of gold leaf, mosaics, carvings and stained glass. The man responsible for this was the architect Pierre Bossan. The story of Bossan is a moving and tragic one. He was an atheist who became so convinced of the existence and glory of God that he converted to the Christian faith during the construction of the building. Having completed the basilica, Bossan, weakened by illness, was to die in total solitude a few years later.
