News imageIntroduction

Montpellier is one of France's most dynamic and fast-growing cities. Visitors will discover a vibrant, thriving town that seemingly has it all. It benefits from a mild climate and easy access to the Mediterranean.

The city is also an intriguing mixture of both modern and ancient architecture. Despite only beginning to flourish in the 10th century, it still has plenty of history to offer visitors. Montpellier is home to the oldest medical faculty in the world and it is still considered to be one of the best in France. The narrow streets and graceful buildings of the old Montpellier, the botanical gardens and the Musée Fabre are all well worth exploring. The Place de La Comédie, with its contrasting blend of older buildings and contemporary pedestrianisation, illustrates perfectly how Montpellier looks both to its future as well as its past.

The high-profile socialist mayor, Georges Frêche, has been instrumental in regenerating and transforming the city. Much of the city's bold modern architecture is the result of his own particular vision. The flashy Antigone district is the symbol of his ambitious plans for the renewal of the city. With an efficient urban transport system, new tramway and more ambitious projects in the pipeline, Montpellier enters the 21st century with confidence.
