Chingle Hall

My night at a haunted house

Phil Stephens spent the night at Chingle Hall with some friends to raise money for charity - this is what happened...

Diary of a night spent at Chingle Hall...

8.30pm - Arrived, and settled into the great hall

9.30pm - Guided tour of the house and its history

10.00pm - During the tour, one visitor comments that there is somebody else 'stood next to him' at the top of the staircase. Nobody is within two metres.

10.30pm - Wandering round, taking photos and video

11.30pm - Whilst investigating in the back garden, one visitor shrieks as she is 'grabbed around the waist' by somebody... She was standing at least three metres away from anybody else at the time!

1.00am - One visitor returns from upstairs, reporting he was unable to use the toilet as an unknown force was holding the door from the inside. He eventually opens the door to find nobody inside.

1.15am - Whilst sitting around, chatting in Eleanor's room, four of us clearly hear loud women's footsteps on wood, approaching down the corridor... The only two women in the house are present in the room. As we investigated in the corridor, it soon became apparent nobody was there, and the floors are in fact covered in rugs!

2.30am - Again the footsteps are heard, only much fainter this time. Described as possibly that of a child.

3.00am to 7.00am - Fell asleep in Eleanor's room... sorry!

7.30am - One visitor reports a strong smell of incense in the chapel, this is then authenticated by four other visitors.

7.30am - Departed... But not before taking some more eerie photos of Chingle Hall in the dawn light...

"We arrived at at the hall at around 8.30pm, and even from outside, the house portrayed a very eerie image in the dimly lit Lancashire countryside. As our guide led us across the bridge and over the moat to the main entrance, it was evident that something was very out of the ordinary...

Upon arriving in the Great Hall, our guide for the evening regaled us with the history of the building, and the nature of its current paranormal inhabitants!

The first thing that surprised me, was that a family actually lived at Chingle Hall all the time, and they are in theory simply inviting people to spend the evening in their home! Mind you, as the guide explained, the family do have a number of uninvited guests staying in the house full time... it's just that you cant ALWAYS see them...

During a brief tour of the house, the guide informed us of the many sightings that had occurred with alarming regularity! Ranging from simple strange noises, to ghostly monks walking the corridors and stairways in the night! He explained that he had stayed at the house on many occasions in the last few years, and it was rare not to witness at least one bizarre occurrence during the night!

With my appetite well and truly whetted, I finished off my beer, loaded up the camera, and headed off for what would be my first trip of the evening, round the rooms and corridors of Chingle Hall.

Saint John Wall's room is renowned for sightings of the ghostly monks, and regular mechanical noises, as if the chains were still trying to lift the bridge over the moat...

At the end of the corridor, I found Eleanor's room...

Eleanor's room is well documented as probably the most haunted at Chingle Hall. Legend tells of a young girl held captive for over 12 years in this room, where she was to die at the age of 20. Visitors have reported feeling overwhelming emotion upon entering the room and the sensation of somebody holding their hand or tugging at their clothes. It is also not uncommon to be surrounded by an overwhelming smell of lavender...

Travelling back down the stairs, I found myself back in the Great Hall, where all visitors to Chingle Hall congregate for the night. Here we found a ghostly carrier bag. Upon arrival it was full of beer, yet strangely, the following morning, it was completely empty... :)

Just next to the great hall, is the chapel...

This chapel is blessed by both Catholic and Protestant priests, the chapel has been witness to many ghostly happenings. It is not uncommon for visitors to report an extremely strong incense aroma surrounding the lectern.

Chingle Hall really is out of the ordinary, and strange things really DO happen!"

Please note: We believe that Chingle Hall is no longer open to visitors.

I went to Chingle Hall with my family around ten years ago. It's the only supernatural experience I've ever had. We didn't actually go in the house because I think it was privately owned at that time. I walked round the back of the house, I remember feeling uneasy like someone was watching me so I turned back. My brother said because I felt uneasy he would come with me to the back of the house. We stood in the back garden and took some photos of the rear of the house. Nothing unusual. Then we had our photographs developed (this was before the days of digital!)... in one of the upstairs windows was a figure illuminated by lights. It looked like a monk but difficult to tell. One thing was certain though, it was watching us.

Its interesting to read the experiences of people who wanted to go to the hall and challenge their beliefs fuelled by alcohol and armed with a blinkered view. How scientific! never mind with so many drunks with bad attitudes and with time on their hands a break from the pub or watching match of the day may seem a good idea. Its little wonder Chingle Hall has closed its doors to visitors!

I was one of the tour guides there from 1991 I remember a number of these stories. We did many over nights there during this time.None of it was staged at all. Those of you that remember the lavendar smell that was a freshsir spray used by the owner in the private room at the time

i visted chingle hall unwilling with my family when i was about 11 as a believer and i didnt feel, see or hear a thing. nowadays, as a sceptic, i would love to return to chingle hall and stay the night, but i can honestly say that i dont think i will see anything. i dont believe, therefore my head cant be filled with a load of storys that will change my perseption on the night.

could you please find out if chingle hall will be re-opened to the public in the near future

spent the night at Chingle Hall with five friends from work some years ago.I have to confess that the only spirits that i saw were in a bottle of navy rum that i had brought with me for some dutch courage. After consuming half the bottle i fell asleep in the main hall over the table,i don't know what the spirits of the monks thought. However i do remember seeing a blue/green orb of light in the main hall, and two of the women with us heard and observed the latch on the door of the priest room move and rattle up and down, also some photographs we took with odd images on them, sadly now missing presumed lost.

i have been there three times, first with family, then twice with mates and didnt see a thing in the 3 times i have been there. All the ghostly events surrounding the house are quite intriguing, but i am pretty sure a good amount of all this tale is merely IMAGINATION.

Nikki sewter
my mum tells me i have a gift at supernatural phernomena my grandma communicates with me in my dreams and then in real life i get de ja vu of what happened in my dream

The Ghost Busters
We are not afraid nor even belive in ghosts - they is a group of 10 of us - we will raise money for charity and all stay over in the house - we will record the whole thing and set the record straight - where do we sign?

shelly flynn
ive been 2 this hse many times and on 1 visit there was a little girl in yellow dress on briage wen let into hse isaid i met your daughter out side she said i dont have 1 but i always felt i was not alone

Mark
I have been to Chingle Hall twice. The first time I went I got quite drunk and fell asleep and missed it! The next time, I was more alert and eager to discover whether or not there was anything a miss. I 'sort of' felt a presence but, as a sceptic, was not sure wether or not this was just me 'wanting something to happen'. Overall, it was definitely worth the stay and would recommend it to anyone. Looking back on the experience, I strongly believe in all things paranormal but feel the whole thing was 'hyped' up (big time) by the guide who showed us round (I won't mention HER name!!). She kept telling us things which , frankly I feel were a load of rubbish. It was simply her way of trying to get us 'in the right frame of mind for believing we will see something!'

Gary
Chingle Hall is no longer open to visit due to the present owners use of it as their private home.I have had the pleasure of staying at the hall at night in a small private group on two occasions both were eventful my first was in the mid 1990s the last visit was around 18 months ago or so before it closed its doors, and was not recomended for the inexperienced or novice paranormal investigator. To get the best from this site and its past residents you require to take the subject seriously and be respectful but also be open minded, and know just what you are doing or letting yourself in for.If you treat your visit as a joke or are a person who scoffs at hauntings and ghosts you will be unlikley to see or experience anything due to your closed mind and blinkered views. Samlesbury Hall is as good a venue and only a few miles away it is an exellent haunted site you can still visit especially at night on one of the events or tours they have.

i went to chingle hall when i was about 16 im 30 now and didnt see a thing in fact it was a bit of a laugh

I stopped at chingle hall in 1989. It was the most terrifying experience i have ever encontered. I was desperately uneasy throughout the entire experience. We stopped there for charity and nothing worked - watches, cameras, walkmans, well anything with a battery. we also experienced problems with doors being held shut and then opening without anyone being there and also footseps coming down the stairs but no shadows on the white walls of the staircase. I have never summed up the courage to revisit.

Megan Paul
I was walking past around midnight when out of the corner of my eye i saw shadows. I didnt really take any notice but then I saw a man on the roof and he looked at me in a puzzled manner, I ran as fast as I could home!

rachael knowles

I was only about four when i went to Chingle Hall with my mum and brother who was about ten. My mum remembers feeling very uneasy in the landing upstairs and my brother felt a tickle on the back of his neck in Eleanors room he was alone but thought it was my mum, to his surprise she was stood at the other side of the room and there was nobody around him. My mum and brother both say that i went rather hyper in priest's hiding place and wanted to go and speak to the little girl... pitty i can't remeber anything!!!

I stayed with my School Freinds to raise money for charity. We also saw some activity in the early hours outside the main hall. Theere was a figure dressed in white! It was hard to make out if it was a lady or a man but it sure freaked me out. We also got the strange smell of lavender in elanors room. Very chilling indeed. I would love to return to do some more investigation!

Claire Lamb ( Nee Wilkinson)
It was about 1995 when I stayed at Chingle for a sponsored event for the RNIB organised by our local milkman Vic Allonby. It was quiet an eventful stay; with bangs and shufflings coming from the Priest's room behind the main hall, nobody was there to make the noises. Also the distinct sound of a drawbridge, being either raised ot lowered, the sound of the cogs turning. Also saw a figure pass a window outside the great hall, then realised nobody could have walked past because of the steepness of the empty moat!!

Late 9Os visited Chingle Hall but seemed closed. Saw nice woman gardening /tidying at side of house, wearing blue mac and wellies.Smiled at me, I smiled back. Saw her again on tv-Discovery's Ghosthunters- Mrs Howarth, who had been dead for some years.....

Greg Holloway
Hi im from a team of investigators who stayed the night at chingle in april and got a lot of activity, from mysterious orbs to strange banging noises and foot steps that would echo as i walked along the draw bridge, even somebody grabbing my arm and producing a large amount of static around me .Years ago my family and i went to chingle and i wouldnt get out of the car until i saw our guide who literally looked half man ,half woman. At the door an old lady let us enter and our way out ,i pointed out to the guide that the old lady who was in a picture on the wall had let us in . Her comments were. "this cant be as the lady i was pointing at had died ten years before " Thw womam i had witnessed was the old mrs Howarth, previous owner of chingle.

I spent the the night there with a group of freinds, nothing happened during the night, we wanted to get our monies worth, the next morning about 430am we did a weegy, it was horrible, names and loads of dates came, knowing the only lad out of the three of us was a joker, i told him to take his finger off the glass, he was happy to do so as he looked so scared, we carried on, there was so much power, only two index fingers on the glass, we let go because of the speed of the glass, it just gave us numbers constantly, i was too scared at the time and cannot rememeber them, also i took a camcorder along withe me with to batteries, both were previously powered, i had 5 hrs of filming, as soon as i turned the camcorder on they lost power, this happened in elaners room, with one of our hardest lads who said he fealt so sad, holding hands with another member of the team, we then all fealt overwhelming sadness, i was trying to film, i fealt it too, i gave up on the camcorder, two batteries and no power, yet they were powered up readt to go b4 we went.

Gill
