Fleetwood Gym

Warton Typhoons 0–0 Fleetwood Gym

By Mike Greenhalgh
Gym travelled to St Annes to play Typhoons, hopeful for another positive result after their first season's win the previous weekend.

Gym made the early running but it was Typhoons that had the first shot on goal which was coolly dealt with by keeper Bradie Stewart.

Tom Duggan and Anthony Bowker were busy in the middle of the park, driving play forward. Jack Wilkinson, Mikey Drurie, Cameron Hirst and Jack Greenhalgh were resolute at the back. Some great work down the left wing from Jake Ashurst allowed Anthony Bowker to shoot, forcing a fine save from the Typhoons keeper.

Jake Sumner broke free down the left and found himself with a goal-scoring opportunity but was pushed to the ground, appeals for a free kick fell on deaf ears. A few minutes later a Typhoons defender handled in the box but obviously the ref had left his specs at home and the infringement went unpunished. The half ended goal-less, but there was plenty of optimism for Gym in the second half.

George Burns and Jake Ashurst probed away down the left wing and a shot from Jake a few minutes into the half was just wide. Gym found the back of the net ten minutes later but the flag was up for offside and the goal disallowed. The positive play from Gym paid off and a free kick was earned just outside the left side of the Typhoons box. Anthony Bowker deftly angled the ball into the box and Tom Duggan's header rattled the bar before bouncing back into play, the rebound was tapped in but agonisingly for Gym - was disallowed for offside.

Typhoons had a chance of their own a few minutes later but the shot was neatly taken care of by keeper Bradie Stewart. Steve Watson looked to have broken the deadlock for Gym but his shot had found the wrong side of the side netting. Typhoons broke through the Gym defence in the last couple of minutes of the game and looked to have stolen the win but defender Jack Greenhalgh and keeper Bradie Stewart just did enough to unsettle the Typhoons striker and the shot drifted harmlessly wide and the game ended 0-0. A well-contested game, which saw Gym with the majority of the possession and the goal-scoring opportunities. Whilst the single point will be welcomed I'm sure Gym will be disappointed not to have clinched the extra couple of points.
