By Mike Greenhalgh It was a positive start from Gym with Daniel Stoney looking threatening up front, but it was Wyre Juniors who opened the scoring with a deflected shot beating the keeper.
Daniel Stoney won a free kick for Gym when he was unfairly bundled off the ball, Anthony Bowker struck the free kick well and the ball sailed over the Wyre keeper's fingers to level the score.
Shortly after though, a shot from Wyre managed to beat the outstretched fingers of Gym keeper Bradey Stewart to edge into the lead. Great defending from Jack Wilkinson and Jake Sumner kept Gym in the game. Some terrific skill from Daniel Stoney allowed him to go one-on-one with the Wyre keeper but the finish betrayed him and his shot went wide. Jack Wilkinson kept Gym in the game with a superb clearance off the line. Keeper Bradey Stewart played his part with a string of saves in the run up to half time.
A few minutes into the second half, a Wyre shot from the edge of the Gym box sailed over the keeper to increase Wyre's lead to 3-1. Gym's luck seemed to have deserted them as a fantastic run from Tom Duggan enabled him to shoot on goal but the ball rebounded off the cross-bar. Jack Wilkinson was faultless in defence pulling off a number off decisive tackles to earn himself Man of the Match honours. Jake Ashurst and Anthony Bowker worked hard in the middle of the field to try and get Gym back into the game. Wyre were a little fortunate to bag a fourth goal following a goal-mouth scramble but managed to put the game beyond doubt as their lead increased to 4-1. A lovely through ball from Jack Greenhalgh enabled Daniel Stoney to shoot on goal and Gym supporters held their breath as the shot beat the outstretched keeper's fingers but also skimmed the outside of the post. A good effort from Gym, a little more consolidation should see them notch up their first win of the season.
