Both teams began creating many chances and had to battle hard. 10 minutes in and TCFC began to put the pressure on Euxton with shots being saved from McCarthy, McGill, Massie and Cross. However a quick over the top Euxton ball caught the defence out and Euxton took the lead. Heads remained held high and Thornton continued to play football. McCarthy crossed the ball to Smithy only for the keeper to clear off the back line. A perfectly placed corner once again found Smithy who in turn found the back of the net. 1-1. The second half saw more battling from both teams. Once again Cross, McCarthy and McGill were denied by the Euxton goalie. A quick counter attack from Euxton enabled them to score a second. What a body blow after such commanding defending from Schoey and Cardwell, assisted by confident keeping from Wilkinson. How would they respond? In spectacular fashion would be the answer. The midfield pair of Cross and McCarthy chased and harried, causing panic, which allowed Massie to knock the ball back to the edge of the area for Cardwell to let one rip into the top corner of the goal post and bounce over the line. Get in! Extra time began and the fitness of the Thornton girls became apparent. This time, Thornton showed no mercy, turning the screw on their opponents until the pressure finally told. Cardwell won the ball in defence weaved her way up the pitch and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper. Wild celebrations followed on the sidelines, with all 21 spectators and a dog going barmy! TCFC remained composed and some outstanding back tracking and defending from Cross, Massie and McCarthy kept Euxton at bay. Euxton piled forward in the closing minutes, but the girls held firm to be greeted with deserved clapping, cheering and pats on the back. They had ensured their passage to the quarter finals. Well done girls!!! Man of the Match: The Man of the Match Trophy went to Cardwell for her equalizing and winning goal and the Touch of Class Trophy went to Smithy for her ever powerful goal. |
