Working out VAT 1

key point
VAT is 17.5 %

Here’s a way of working out VAT using a calculator:

key point

Price * 17.5/100

Add the answer to the original price to get the price inclusive of VAT.

Here’s an example:
A mobile phone costs £59.57 excluding VAT. What’s its full price?
59.57 * 17.5/100
To do this sum on a calculator, enter these numbers:
59.57 x 17.5 ÷100 =

The VAT is £10.42. You add this amount to the £59.57 to get the VAT inclusive price, which is £69.99.

Now it's your turn:

You’ve found a great digital camera for £169 ex VAT.
What is the total you have to pay including VAT?

Work out the sum on the calculator, and then click on ’check’ when you’ve finished.
