What's the time difference

The time difference between the UK and Cyprus is +2 hours GMT.

You are flying from Birmingham and it takes 4 hours 20 mins to get to Larnaca in Cyprus. If you leave at 11:45, what time will you arrive? (if it runs on time, that is.)

key pointRemember, when adding and subtracting minutes we do not always use base 10

On the way back you leave Larnaca Airport at 22:05. What time will you get back to Birmingham?

To add on 3 hours 45 minutes to 15:25 the sum would look like this.
To take away 3 hours 45 minutes from 15:25 the sum would look like this.
15:25 plus 3hrs 45mins = 19:10
15:25 - 3 hrs 45 mins = 11:40
As there are only 60 minutes in an hour, the 'tens' column of the minutes is in base 6. Base 6 counts as: 1,2,3,4,5, 10, 11 etc.
Therefore, 2 + 4 + the carried 1 = 11.
.
Because there is only 2 in the 'tens' column of the minutes, we borrow from the hours column. Because that hour is now minutes, and therefore in base 6, you add 6 to the 2, so that column now has 8.
Got that?
