Rollercoast; Could this work at the Zoo?
Rollercoast; Could this work at the Zoo?

Imagine you had the opportunity to build ANYTHING in Jersey, from a skate park to turning the whole island into a mini Disney world.

There have been calls lately for a quad bike track, a skateboard ramp, in town bowling alley, ice skating and more. We want to know what you really want.

Everyone want's something different for their free time, it's what makes society as varied and interesting as it actually is. It's obvious that not everything can be done, but in an ideal world we want to know what you would like to see in Jersey.

Would you like to see the Fort turned into a giant shopping mall, or maybe an ice skating rink built on the Waterfront? Would you prefer to see a massive stadium for hosting major bands like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers?

How about a free open national gallery for Jersey housing some of our best artists alongside works from the best of the world. Turning St Mary into a giant Skate Park or putting a rollercoaster at the Zoo.

Imagine you had the opportunity to build ANYTHING in Jersey, from a skate park to turning the whole island into a mini Disney world.

if i could build something in jer it would be in st brelades .for many years now not much has been done to the park behind checkers.it would take a few millionaires to give back to the island and this would be well welcome to make a adventure play ground ..the land was given for the children of st brelade ,if i had that type of money id make a water tunnels everything exciteing that the youth of st brelade would enjoy ,so how about it send your gifts to help this park grow

dev
i think we should turn jersey in to a pornland

As a jewel in the crown of Europe perhaps the states could be an EEC centre for the elite of Brussels to convene as Europe leads the world forward in tolerance and enjoyment of the best in life and happiness. We saw off the Nazi and we have to integrate islam with our faith.

Richard (new resident)
As an outsider I can say that I am not upto speed on a lot of the history of the states, however from a social and business point of view I would recomend a few of the following.

How about a decent Casino (up class not a low brow afair). Everyones coments about affordable housing for returning students is well made, alternativly what about developing a university link offering some degrees that students can study here on the island just through one of the colleges? Or hey why not build a university!

A theme park would be great, but may not be practical with the cost of development versus the relativly small population. A permenant and more regulated water sports centre. The waterfront centre is a massive waste of space, I have never seen the cinema in any way busy.

From a visitors point of view the Sunday opening laws are quite restrictive, so maybe a review of them would help loosen tourists wallets a little more and bring some extra revenue to the island over the weekends.

I think we could benefit from a 24hr supermarket - like Tescos. It's all very well saying we're only allowed to eat Jersey grown produce, but all we have are potatoes and cows! We're very limited on choice - not just food either. An ice-skating rink would be fantastic, or a BIG shopping mall.Dominos Pizza and Starbucks too.I can see why the states don't want these big names on the island, but what about us islanders? What if we do?!No-one can afford to just fly to England or France just to do some decent shopping. That's a point, how about building a bridge from Jersey to France like the Florida Keys, or a train tunnel from Jersey to England like the chunnel?

I agree with AJ. Let's start by getting rid of everything the States have built between 1945 and about 1990 - and most of what they have approved before and since. Between the States building in the Royal Square and Liberation Court, there is virtually nothing the States have been involved in with any architectural or aesthetic merit. The airport departure hall and almost everything on the Waterfront also need replacing. It's hardly surprising we have such a lousy planning department -look at the eyesore they work from on South Hill. Get rid of the whole lot of them and level the building. Once all these have gone, we will have lots of open spaces, park and garden space and fewer States employees. Think of all the money that will release back in to our pockets. No need for GST or any other new taxes then!

Mick
Get rid of the bloody jersey pearl, unearth the swimming pool, and return it too its proper and rightful place as the new med. A jerseyman.

This may not be totally relevant, but for starters - I think we should definately place wind turbines on the North Coast - O.k. so it's a "green zone" but come on, barely anyone lives right on the coast and it's always windy up there! Or perhaps we could invest in tidal power. Everyone knows we have one of the largest tidal ranges in the world! - I don't know why we don't have it already...These changes, of course will be pricey, but in the end result - it will cost less, and it will help the environment. Once we've sorted out our renewable energy systems - then we can worry about what the people of jersey need on this island. Furure generations are our priorities, global warming is fast approaching - and once we go over the limit, there will be no stopping. Think about it...

crazy steve
am i the only one who thinks jersy should have a castle built in 14th century stone with a dragon(automated) that pops out of a near by cave and breathes fire! it would be spectacular! battle reenactments would be fun too "charge"

Spiderman
The ice rink at Christmas is a great success every year. Why not build a permanent rink?

Emi
I like the idea betty had except i rekon all of the islands chavs and thugs should be locked in there, i also think we should get a starbucks ;-D And a fake ski slope would be AMAZING!!! like a really big one...maybe they could build it out at sea and people would have to get there on a free ride by the ducks that normally go to Lizzie Castle...WOW! And it couls be the biggest in Europe...no no..the World!! ok a little over the top but imagine the money jersey would get frm people coming over and going to visit it, buying t-shirts, hats, skis, boards....socks...aaaahhhh...im practically druelling!

boz
i think there should be a coffe shop built were me n bosh can splay out and get caned!! legalise cannabis

Mike
An Indoor Surfing arena. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/3029109.stm

wayne littlewood
how about more caffs and more theme park areas. xx

Sqn Leader C Gull
A huge bird table reserved only for seagulls.

Nick
Karting track is a must....the fort is perfect for a shopping centre, or a place to go at night, have loads of bars and nightclubs there, a small casino, restaurants, then it would be easier to police as everyone would be in the same place.....they have to do something with the fort otherwise it will be the next inn on the park.

AJ
Never mind BUILDING new stuff, what about REMOVING some of the rubbish we've already got?

Stanley
I want a chocolate fountain. I LUV CHOCOLATE

bob
I want a Krispy Kreme donut shop in the island. I luv Donuts!!!!!! Or even better a donut factory where I can work and eat free donuts all day

betty
i think we should build a massive dungeon and lock all the states members in it.By locking them away would stop them from ruining the island anymore and then people can get around to making this island brilliant!!!

Skate Park west Park The Youth of TODAY:- PROLIFIC youth offenders are being blamed for a 14.2 per cent increase in recorded crime.

I'm just a bit mussed by the way most of the Youth are handled today.

Everyone seems to complain about the youth these days. What are our Island Politicians doing about this nothing, apart from Meeting after meeting wasting thousand of pounds sitting and debating whether or not to build a fun park for the youth to play in. A park is for having fun not just tidy green grass.

I writing to explain that I believe we should be helping these kids with letting out there frustration with sport, not like football or rugby-team sports where you have to rely on others to participate in a team sport.

Why can't the states build a fun-park for the people of jersey so they can go to an open space to Skate, long-Skate, In-line or BMX for free, as this will start to generate a larger individual sport culture which will take a high percentage away from hanging out around the Weighbridge's Pubs and Clubs and allow some of the Islands youth to hang onto there youth. ie.:-

America, Canada, Australia and most of UK and Europe have these parks which are free from their local Governments. And what do we have in Jersey apart from a SCARY drinking Culture and faulty STEAM clock, which none of the Islands people wanted, but we got it anyway. When I was a lot younger we had Fort Regent and even that has now been made in to an adult centre. Is it all about MONEY ?

If only the Islands people got together and put more thought on helping the Youth of tomorrow, than knock them down till they are old enough to rebel against our Local society and then we can once again complain

Let’s try and get the FUNDING instead of putting it off for another Yr as we are already half way through this yr and nearly all a year older.

Amena
i am 12 years old and i think that jersey should have a theme park, and fun and exiting things for families and shou;d spend all the mony it gets to decorate jersey and make it in to a famouse modern island

henry
Some things never change and that includes the diversity of genuine jersey thinking. please dont do what has happened here in the ''main land'',drive the young and older jersey people out because they cannot aford to come home. henry

alisha
let jersey be fun!

Roisin
i agree with Simon - more affordable accommodation should be made available. I'm currently in my second year at university studying primary teaching and I'd love to come back to Jersey to live once I have completed my degree and qualified but I feel put off by the expense side of things. I think Jersey will lose a lot of my generation as we will just end up settling for somewhere in England which is more affordable.

eddy
i think dat we should realy build a theme park coz funland's burnt down and for da adults inn on da parks been knocked down and soon basicly everthin is gonna turn into flats and houses and hotels will shut down and were runnin out of fings to do which causes vandalism from da youthes coz de got nofin better to do

Aaron
An ice rink has to be the best thing that could be built. Not only could you cater for public skating, but also Ice Hockey at all levels from Under10's upwards (get some of the thugs off the street!), curling (has everyone forgotten the Winter Olympics already?), ice dancing (Next Torvell and Dean from Jersey...) and best of all - xmas shows like Disney on ice!!!

paul
islanders have been deprived of a karting track for too long!

matt
what about just getting rid of everything and starting from scratch, makes much more sense! :)

Tennis fan
Or what about a Jonny Wilkinson statue or David Beckham? If you start now, we can tempt even more famous sports people to leave their money here. We could even find some space for good old Graham.

Tennis fan
How about a monument to Tim Henman? He's bound to live here for "tax reason" eventually, so why not start now... we could inscribe a plaque with all his near Wimbeldon misses and then add "with his loss, British tennis is now dead" - but he is in the French open quarters, so you never know... or what about a Nigel Mansell statue with his big tasche?

OZZY
LEAVE IT AS IT IS HEVEN ON EARTH

Frankie
I worked in Hong Kong for five years and came back here two years ago. I agree with Jeff, build some tall accommodation blocks, it may be the only way, Hong Kong has loads of them, but it also has miles of open countryside, amazing wildlife and great beaches that no one associates with it. If we want to increase the population but preserve the countryside it may be the only way. Hong Kong also has a world class finance industry and is a world class destination. Our politicians seems to think we need the same, so there's your blueprint, but with the way this island is run it will just stay that - a blueprint! Oh and Hong Kong is actually building a Disney on one of its islands - however thats one thing I don't think we want!

Stuart
There are loads of things like: Indoor Water Park with wave pool & high diving boards Theme park with roller coasters Ice Skating rink Dry Ski Slope Quad Biking track Bungy Park Go-Kart track More para shuting, scuba diving & kayaking businesses Balloon ride going up 100/150m whilst still attached to the ground via ropes. This would work best along the Waterfront. Late night cafes & coffee shops A big club for DJs, bands & comedians (maybe in the Fort) Maybe have a few trams to ease the traffic as well Jersey might be small but there are loads of places to do this stuff. But the problem is with the States. As they will say you can't use the top of the Island as this is a green zone & you can't use the bottom of the Island as this is residential! You can't win with them.

Jeff
A nice 30-40 story condo tower would be nice. Land is at a premium, therefore, it makes sense to build up. The country side can stay green, and the views would be fantastic!

Nicole
How about a decent swimming pool??? aquasplash really let us down, also a coffee shope with lots of places to sit would be great. xx

Angela
Around the lake of Zurich is a huge park where youngsters skate and cycle, people picnic, music pavilion, dogs walked (on leads) - well, people just enjoying life really. The Waterfront area is almost there - but a park would just finish it off!

Ivor
I think the only people who can answer that question are thev States Members - who else in this economic climate is getting salary rises - they are the only crowd with any dissposable income these days

Simon
I know its crazy and 'out there' but how about trying to build affordable accomidation so the youth of Jersey can actually come back to Jersey and live where they were born? If not, then just build the usual penthouse / exclusive garden shed and put it on the market for about 400k!

Richard
How about turning the 'Fort' into a bear baiting arena - or even a cock fighting pit - them we can go back to the good old days - before our politicians ruined a once fine Island.

Bob
I think we should turn Jersey into a real life 'Fantasty Island' like the old TV series - so that our States Members would feel at home -they certainly can't manage in the real world
