Would you buy expensive diamonds, vintage cars or a yacht maybe? How about a plush penthouse pad overlooking the Tyne Bridge and only a stone's throw from the city centre? Well that's just where Julia Hankin begins her journey, in the Turnbull Building just off Newcastle's Quayside
The Turnbull Building| Turnbull Building | | | Description:Spacious, clean living penthouse | | Location: Newcastle | | Fun Facts: Was once used to store prosthetic limbs | | Price: Just over £1 million |
The Turnbull Building dates back to the early 1900's and was used as a print work factory and even a home for prosthetic limbs. But after a recent refurbishment the building has taken on a drastic new identity and is now the home of Newcastle's first million pound house.
The posh penthouse is a world away from Newcastle's terraced streets and council flats, with spectacular views of the river and bridges. The apartment has an open plan design, integrating the living room, kitchen and bedroom areas. This gives a fluid feel to the apartment and with windows running down two sides, allows the natural light to flow through. For Julia, the luxurious penthouse is ideal for unattached men or couples without children, but not quite her 'cup of tea'
There's no where for Julia to grow her cabbages! But what else can you get for your money? Julia decides to look for somewhere a little more
cosy! Jesmond Road West - A Blank Canvas
| Jesmond Road West | | | Description: Large terraced 5 bedroom house | | Location: Newcastle | | Fun Facts: Comes with a personal designer! | | Price: Just over £1 million |
Moving swiftly from the classy penthouse pad to the soon to be "Millionaires' Row" in Jesmond, Julia meets up with world famous designer Bruce Oldfield. Bruce is redesigning these terraced town houses, into luxurious designer city living homes. After completion the street will revert back to its 1840's title of 'Charlton Row'. But what do you get for your money? Well £1 million will get you the house as an empty shell plus Bruce Oldfield to design and create your wildest dreams. With this property you will truly have a 'designer home' as each house will be tailor made and completely individual. But what if you're not into all this city living? Well Julia's journey takes her to Windermere in search of a Lakeside property. Lake District Retreat| Brant Howe | | | Description: Three bedroom house overlooking the lake | | Location: Cunsey, Windermere | | Fun Facts: Comes with 56 acres of land! | | Price: Just under £1 million |
The Lake District has fantastic views and with the changing seasons brings with it the colours of the rainbow. Julia's last property takes her to a house with a room with a view, and this view is just bliss.
For just under £1million the house looks quite modest, with three bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and two bathrooms. However this house is very different from the rest. It overlooks Lake Windermere and comes with 56 acres of land, lake frontage, a boathouse and a jetty. 50 acres of the land is pure woodland and all the wildlife that comes with it. Julia seems to have found her paradise in the Lake District, but what would a mortgage cost? MortgageWell if you are looking for a mortgage for a £1 million property, you really need to be on a footballer's wage! The average price per month is around £4,300 at 4% interest and repaying over 25 years. The total repayment would be around £1,290,000. We worked out that you should be earning around £250,000 per year! Dream OverJulia's journey has taken her across the region to see just what £1 million would buy. We've seen plush penthouses with views of the river, stylish town houses designed by world renowned Bruce Oldfield and country retreats with acres of land, a boathouse and jetty. For Julia, the mortgage repayments are a little
excessive. So the dream is over and it's back to reality and her humble abode in Newcastle, perfect for growing cabbages! But if you had the money, what would be your dream home? |
