The story was related to me by my Grandfather, Gilbert Hares of the Old Malt House, Mongeham, Deal, Kent but never by my mother, Ivy.

They were not combatants but civilians taking a walk into Deal one day during the period of the Battle of Britain. Whilst walking along London Road, a Messerschmitt BF109 made a straffing run along that road. My Grandfather made a dash and threw himself under a hedge, shouting for my mother to do the same. It would appear that she stood totally routed to the spot, unable to move.
She survived, but we shall never know how much that effected her to her dying day . I'm sure it did have a long term effect.
