Before I could complete my driving training had to go up the Lake District in convoy, driving on my own (normally I had an instructor with me).
I was driving a 30 hundred weight Fordson, with crash gear box, and there was another girl doing her training in the back. We would swop over and she would do some of the driving, but it was a bumpy ride in the back, especially when we had to brake or let the clutch out.
One particular part of the training I remember well, as it invloved driving at night in full gas kit - with a gas mask - and a tin hat. It was impossible to talk to the instructor and instead we made noises like pigs as we breathed in and out.
Once I had taken my test in Lancaster, and found out that I had passed I had my first home leave for 3 months! Yipee!
I was then posted to Faygate to begin my contribution to the War Effort!
