CD review by Toxic Pete

The Irony: Ten Stories High

Pete Brown, AKA Toxic Pete, is an international music reviewer based in Worcester. He's regularly approached by major record labels to comment on their latest releases. Read his views on one local CD...

'Ten Stories High' by The Irony came as a very pleasant surprise; I expected some more of the usual alt/indie/rock, nothing fresh, nothing original. I didn't get that though. The Irony show a great deal of originality here, excellent songs, a signature style, refreshingly different without taking unnecessary risks.

The Irony

'Ten Stories High' goes to places that most indie outfits fail to visit - the world of innovation. The Irony are not only distinctive, but they're also entertaining and very very refreshing. The Irony have a nicely proportioned Britishness about them; hard to describe, hard to exactly put yer finger on but, it's there, there's a quirky thing goin' on that's really appealing and nicely delivered. The band play with a feeling of unity and solidarity; everything's just so, everything's well weighted, it's all so right.

The Irony are Dave Hughes (vocals/guitars), Adam Ealey (keyboards/backing vocals), Baz White (bass/backing vocals) and Loz Hancock (percussion). Without a doubt, one of the pro's for The Irony is singer Dave Hughes and his unique voice and delivery - it's wonderfully easy on the ear and beautifully suited to The Irony's music. But, Hughes couldn't do it on his own, so it's a good job that the other guys offer him the kind of support he needs and deserves.

"The Irony show a great deal of originality here, excellent songs, a signature style, refreshingly different without taking unnecessary risks."

Toxic Pete

If I have any criticism at all, it would be that the final production (or the mastering) could be just a touch bigger and perhaps a tad more dynamic. However, there's actually nowt at all wrong with 'Ten Stories High' - it's a sneaky little work that really does creep up on you and, as the album progresses, you start to feel as if you are part of something - you belong with The Irony - it's a weird feeling, but a feeling that's really cool. The Irony make that happen - it's the songs, it's the musicianship, it's the whole damn thing - it's annoyingly catchy and unputdownable.

'Ten Stories High' by The Irony is a stonkin' good album - it's got a richness about it, colour, texture, and a sort of musical patina that suggests a high level of input and careful handling. I'm hooked already and can't wait to get time to listen again! The Irony prove that being individualistic is a positive in this game - The Irony create a sound and vibe that's totally theirs and 'Ten Stories High' is all the better for that originality and flair - excellent and I absolutely love it!

You can listen to all of the latest music from across the two counties on the Friday Session Introducing... every week from 7pm, on BBC Hereford & Worcester.
