There's been a castle at Wigmore since 1069, and though the building is now a ruin, the site is worth a visit for the views from the site, and the history that surrounds it. The whole site is now being looked after by English Heritage, who are working to ensure that the remaining ruins are preserved. To get to Wigmore take the A4110 from Hereford, passing through Mortimer's Cross, site of the famous battle. Drive through the village of Wigmore, and as the road begins to climb the hill, look out for a turning on the right, where the car park for the castle is. Walk back and cross the road, and go up the hill through Wigmore churchyard. It's quite a climb, but well worth the effort, for the views alone. There's a very comprehensive history of the castle, complete with a drawing of what it would have looked like in its pomp, on an information board as you enter the site. last updated: 09/07/2008 at 08:51 You are in: Hereford and Worcester > Places > Places Stories > Wigmore Castle [an error occurred while processing this directive] | ||||||||||||||||
