Bruce Russell with the Ormer Bowl

Bruce Russell with the Ormer Bowl

A piece of Guernsey for the Daring

Guernsey's ship HMS Daring has a piece of the island aboard in the form of a specially made silver Ormer Bowl.

The bowl is the third piece to have been commissioned by the States of Guernsey for a naval vessel using gold and silver smith Bruce Russell, the previous two being for HMS Guernsey and HMS Alderney.

This particular piece is an Ormer Bowl conceived by Bruce as something that was "really Guernsey... that was the hard part".

The bowl is 12 inches in diameter and made of solid silver, the top of the bowl forms a wave shape and Bruce described this as looking like "all those little sparkles on the sea" that you get when the sun is shining.

He added that this effect took more than a million hammer marks to create.

The base of the bowl is made of six silver ormer shells, and in the bottom of the bowl is a disc of solid gold marked with the crest of Guernsey.

The bowl took Bruce nine days to make and is worth £2950, though he added "I would say that is a bargain".

The bowl was presented to HMS Daring in July 2009 and Bruce said he hoped "it would be a talking point" when dignitaries go on board.
