Vedrey Tora in St Sampson's Harbour

One of the tankers brought by the States

What would you call Guernsey's Fuel Tankers?

In mid-December 2008 the States of Guernsey brought two fuel tankers to guaruntee supply to the island, but what would you call them?

The purchase of the two fuel tankers by the States has been the subject of much discussion and debate since it was announced in December 2008.

But as well as all the financial and political questions is the thought of what Guernsey could rename them, as they are currently named the Vedrey Tora and Vedrey Thor Gary Burgess asked listeners to his show to suggest some ideas...

Sarnia and Cherie - Yvonne and Eileen
Climate and Change - Richard
Sarnia and Bailiwick - Mick
The Isaac Brock and the Lord De Saumarez - Val and Joan
Bulwer and Bordeaux - Rose
Credit and Crunch - Brian
Don and Key (Donkey!) - Joan
St Julian and St Patrick (after the old mail boats that used to come to the island) - Pam
Costa Lot and Costa Fortune - Jill
Jean Breton (the pilot who guided Lord de Saumarez inside the reef off the west coast) and one of Guernsey's celebrated Lifeboat Coxwains- Roy
Victoria and Albert - Bobby
Ormer and Nerine - Jackie

Liquid Gold and Platinum Princess - Graham
Lyndon's Folly or States' Folly and In the Red - Colin
St Sampson and St Saviour - Barbara
Road Closed and Diversion - Brian
Guernsey Lily and Le Vaissea - Ann
Pig and Poke - Phil
Bean and Jar - Gary, as he pointed out they're going to be carrying gas
Toilers Of The Sea 1 & 2 - Anne
Samson and Delilah - Fred
The Vigeur and The Valour - Art
Adam and Eve - Sheila
Coalport and The Harold Hobbs - Jeff
The Liberation and The Freedom - Colette
Ted and Steve Noyon who were both ships pilots working out of St Sampsons, both passed away in the last year - Margaet
St Sampsons and Braye Du Valle - Maureen

Several callers suggested various island bays would make good names too such as L'Ancresse, Belle Greve, Fermain, Rocquaine, Havelet and Portelet

One anonymous caller however did point out that you should not rename boats as that is unlucky!

I would love to see one of the boats named 'The Noyan' as a tribute to the Ted and Steve Noyan who lived for St Sampsons harbour and lead many ships to safety. This tribute I am sure would be very welcomed by many Guernsey Folk
