The Fourth Annual Greenman Chaos Weekend and Discharge Music Festival kicked off on Friday 27 June despite the strong winds and showers battering Pleinmont, Guernsey’s southwestern most point. ![]() Motorbikes lined up in the field When I arrived things seemed to already be in full swing as music was blasting from the speakers at the events three stages provided by DJs before the evenings bands kicked in. With motorcycles lined up along the centre of the arena there is no doubt that they are the central aspect of the event, however, once the bands started in the beer tent and outside most were drawn to either one of the two stages. ![]() Tyler of Stratosfear First up came Stratosfear, in the beer tent, with their indie and mod covers to which the band have a knack of adding a harsher and more exciting edge which has served them well. Tonight they were greeted with a mild but appreciative reception and by the closing number, 'My Generation', originally by The Who of course, they had a few people coming forward and dancing. ![]() Liam of Beetlejuice Outside and the Discharge Main Stage kicked off in true chaotic style with young punks Beetlejuice. Providing their usual mess of jagged sounds they seemed to add something new to the mix this evening with a distorted 'bass solo' and a few new numbers, one of which, seemingly decrying the 'emo' fad actually seemed to be almost a fully formed song with a message behind it too! Beetlejuice were followed on the main stage by pop punkers 2 Minutes 2 Late who tonight were joined by Goldfish Don't Bounce guitarist Rhys Kirby owing to the absence of their usual guitar player. ![]() Pikey of 2 Minutes 2 Late Because of this they limited their set to mostly covers which as usual were a great nostalgia trip for those of us who grew into punk and rock via the likes of Blink-182 and despite a distant crowd and a few issues with the sound system, including a full blown power cut, the band still managed to put on a good fun show. By this point in the evening the beer tent was filling up nicely and covers act Fuzed were on stage. Playing a mix of pop rock covers from T. Rex to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Fuzed seem to be proficient performers but tonight just lacked the necessary confidence to really get across to the crowd. ![]() FalenizzaHorsepower Back outside on the main stage and the first visitors of the weekend were gearing up in the form of Jersey based avant garde jazz-metallers FallenizzaHorsePower. Despite a set that was marred by technical issues, and an interruption by the impressive Jet Trike, Steve H and Dave S provided a set of always fascinating tunes that were highlighted by the pair's seemingly instinctive on stage connection. last updated: 30/06/2008 at 17:03 You are in: Guernsey > Unsigned Bands > Reviews > Chaos reigns at Pleinmont |
