Bulletproof at Pieces

Bulletproof at Pieces

Punk at Pieces

While three bands from Guernsey headed across the water to Jersey for the Vale Earth Fair Field Trip, one band from 'the other island' came our way to play at Pieces Bar on Saturday 26 April 2008.

That band was Jersey punk heroes Bulletproof who have a built up a major following across both islands and were here tonight to help promote their new EP, 'Distorted Truth'.

Brutus Stonefist

Classic metal stance.

First though Guernsey hardcore metallers, Brutus Stonefist, took to the stage in the already packed, and extremely hot, bar.

Dressed in matching suits, the band seemed much more relaxed in the smaller confines of Pieces where vocalist Tom 'Shinfo' Domaille could connect much better with the crowd than in the larger area of the L'Ancresse Lodge.

The relaxed feeling spread throughout the rest of the band as well, who's performance tonight was more intense than I have ever seen them in the past and with Mark 'The Master of The Riff Stance' Mercier now firmly ensconced in their line up they seem to be elevating their game as the music they play demands.

2 Minutes 2 Late were up next and while they didn't seem to grab the audience in quite the way that Brutus Stonefist did, they still had a few dedicated fans at the front and by the end of their set seemed to have won over a few more.

Playing their usual style of pop-punk the band seemed to be base their set more on originals tonight than they have in the past and this really worked to their advantage. It showed them to be much more than just the covers band they have come across as in the past.

Their original material fitted in very well with the covers they did play and despite the smaller crowd gathered at the front the closing duo of New Found Glory's 'My Friend's Over You' and Blink-182's 'Dammit' went down very well.

Finally tonight the room filled back up again for Bulletproof.

Mixing the best bits of punk rock from 1976 to today the band were flat out from the start with ska, punk and hardcore all rolling into one great sound.

As the set went on a dedicated few began to mosh at the front and as mic stands went flying and the small but packed area in front of the stage was a mass of pogo-ing bodies it evoked the feeling of the best punk gigs as the line between band and crowd was blurred and all were clearly loving the music.

Bulletproof as ever put on a great show and their songs, based largely around political issues and very Jersey and Channel Island centric themes, really showed how this band can take the genre of punk and make it their own.

All too soon though the curfew for the evening came and Bulletproof were done leaving everyone hot, sweaty, but ultimately satisfied.

Having built up the dedicated following they seem to have on our shores, and with the summer festivals approaching, hopefully it won't be too long before we see them back over here again.
