De Jersey one of two deputies ousted

Brian de Jersey was one of the two standing deputies who were not re-elected to the Guernsey States in 2008.

Deputy Brian de Jersey was one of the two standing deputies who didn't get re-elected and he told us of his disappointment.

"The Vale people have decided who they want to vote for, there's been a terrific and fine calibre of candidates and someone had to come in eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth and I happened to come in at number eight and they're only seven seats," said De Jersey.

With only 110 votes between Deputy De Jersey and seventh placed Andrew Le Lievre meaning that 3% of the 3,392 voters made the difference.

Asked if he would have done anything differently the Deputy who will end his time in the States on 30 April was resigned in defeat.

"I'm Brian de Jersey, I spoke up for what I thought, I like to think I've supported the Vale as much as I can and tried to stand up for their rights. Perhaps it's time to have new blood," he said.

He is sure the new deputies will all carry on supporting the Vale and work towards a better island for us to live in.

Brian de Jersey said he has taken what the voters said on board and won't stand again: "I'm 66 now, the good book says three score and ten and in 2012 that will be 70. No, I got the message from the Vale people, I'm satisfied with the message."

But he will continue to be active in the Parish he has served for many years as he is the longest serving douzenier for the Vale and will hold that post until 2010.
