St Peter Port produced the big election night shock, with Deputy Wendy Morgan losing her seat in the northern district. All the other Town deputies were comfortably returned to office, including Barry Brehaut, who topped the poll in the north district with 989 votes, 54 votes more than nearest rival Carla McNulty Bauer. When asked about his status as a 'poll topper' Deputy Brehaut remained resigned saying it was "a relative thing" as his number of votes in another parish or four years ago would have lead to different results. He was of the view that it may have been easier for sitting politicians in St Peter Port South as there were fewer experienced deputies standing than in other districts. Deputy Brehaut thought one of the reasons behind the result may have been that he took more time canvasing this time round and that "made a real difference". Another reason he gave was that he focussed on the social policy that has emerged from the Zero-10 economic policy that the last house had implemented. When questioned about his interest in a ministerial position Barry Brehaut simply said that that issue was "out of my hands". last updated: 28/05/2008 at 18:17 You are in: Guernsey > States of Guernsey > Election 2008 > Brehaut topped the polls in St Peter Port South |
