Hogwash XIBy Tom Girard For the second time this year a group of local bikers took over a field for a weekend of motorcycles and music on the 21st of July 2007. This years Hogwash promised 12 hours of local music across two stages and in that it certainly delivered. Kicking off just after mid day, 'Your Mum' had the dubious honour of starting things off on the outdoor stage to an audience of around four people. ![]() Your Mum open the Hogwash. That being said they played as well as they ever have and a few of their original songs sounded great, and the addition of a second guitarist definitely helped their sound. However it all seems to have been in vain as the band announced their split shortly after coming off stage, so they concentrate on their various other bands. ![]() Spat. Second up were punks Spat who played an extended set again to a small crowd, though slightly larger than Your Mum's. Once again the band seemed bored and agitated on stage especially when playing their older tracks, however they got the energy up on the new songs they played today which shows promise in the future and with their set ending as James smashed his bass and threw it from the stage they showed they still have the punk energy when they want to. ![]() Adam Powell. After a bit of a break Adam Powell took to the stage armed only with an acoustic guitar and provided some great music for a summer afternoon with a set of chilled out acoustic originals and covers. Adam sounded great today and really showed he can use the guitar to its true potential especially on his original songs and a relaxed version of nu-metallers lostprophets' 'Last Train Home'. Following that Adam was joined on stage by Pikey, also with an acoustic guitar, and they played a short set of acoustic covers which again suited the summer afternoon vibe brilliantly, and as this was the first time they had ever played together they sounded fantastic. ![]() The 'monster truck'. Next up it was time the 4x4 show which featured a locally built 'monster truck'! After scaling a stack of cars the customised Land Rover then proceeded to pull a mocked up police car in half before we were given a demonstration from motorcyclist Tom Scott. With the first part of the afternoon's motor based entertainment done a new band took the stage. ![]() A new band on the stage. Yet to come up with a name for themselves, but featuring many familiar faces, they rocked their way through a set of original songs merging sounds from hard rock, metal, rap and funk. For a first performance this promised great things and I hope we get hear a lot more from them over the summer. The burnout contest is always an impressive part of any motorcycle show and this years Hogwash was no exception as a group of bikers burnt some rubber and left a smell in the air that hung around for a good couple of hours. The most impressive sight of the contest went to the police-style BMW which managed to not only blow its tyre but shred its number plate and rear lights. ![]() Stratosfear. When the smoke had cleared from the burnouts one of Guernsey's most gigged bands hit the stage. Stratosfear have been playing their covers of Brit-rock classics round the island for a few years now and today they sounded great. What the band lacked in charisma they more than made up for with their musical talent, however that didn't seem to be enough to grab the attention of the distant crowd. ![]() Rhys of Poor Attempt. The unenthusiastic crowd had all but dispersed when Poor Attempt took to the stage, and while they sounded great as ever it’s a shame there wasn't really anyone there to listen so their set seemed to fall somewhat flat. ![]() 2 Minutes 2 Late. The pop-punk vibe continued next as new band 2 Minutes 2 Late tried to fit as much of their set in as possible before the rain. Featuring a few members of pop-punkers Better Late Than Never, they ran through a great set of covers from bands like Blink 182 and Green Day as well as playing a few promising originals, and alongside bands like Poor Attempt are demonstrating something of a resurgence in pop punk in Guernsey. Unfortunately their set was cut short by the beginnings of the evening’s rain and very hastily things moved into the beer tent. ![]() MyLastVictory. After the PA had been rigged up in the beer tent it was time for metalcore titans MyLastVictory to take the stage, and with only a short set thanks to the PA shift they sounded heavier and more brutal than ever. With the most direct musical comparison to MLV tonight Machine Head, the bands new songs sounded leagues ahead of any of their old material and Josh Fletcher sounded better than ever, something like a metalcore answer to Dave Mustaine. ![]() Gordie of Wild Stallions. The first scheduled band for the tent were on next in the form of veteran rockers Wild Stallions. Playing a selection of classic rock covers from the likes of Van Halen, Deep Purple and Lynyrd Skynyrd they were uniformly fantastic with Gordie Liu once again proving why he is one of the island’s best guitarists. Though their set was short, and the PA system died during their last track they were still one of the day’s highlights. Following the first part of the evening's 'adult entertainment' it was time for the Spitshine Blues Band to get going and as ever they were one of the tightest and most musically talented bands gigging on the island. ![]() J.J. Corbin of Spitshine. What really stood out tonight though was how much J.J. Corbin's voice is improving making him really sound the part of the blues front man. Ending their first set with a storming version of 'Jailhouse Rock' they were the first band to really fill floor. Throughout the rest of the night we were treated to two more sets by Spitshine who eventually closed things with a roaring rendition of 'Johnny B. Goode' which proved to be a true highlight of a great day. Thanks go out to everyone involved organising the day especially Full Boar Motorcycle Club for putting the show together and to Todge for all his work with the sound equipment. last updated: 24/07/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Guernsey > Unsigned Bands > Reviews > Hogwash XI |
