Thee Jenerators Warm Up For London

By Tom Girard
Thee Jenerators once again get the Golden Lion jumping on the 2nd of March 2007 as they get ready for their upcoming trip to the UK.

Before Thee Jenerators leave our shores next week to embark on the journey that is recording their second album, they treated their local fans to a special set at The Golden Lion.

Playing what essentially amounted to two sets worth of material over 2 hours the garage-soul-rockers started out by giving the assembled mass a sneak preview of some of their new material.

On first experience the new stuff is yet another step forward for the bands sound, taking what they started on the 'Who The Hell Is Frank Wilson?' single and expanding it further to fully incorporate their more recently acquired saxophonists.

Live, these songs bristled with the same energy as the bands older material, and while the crowd weren't as into them as the older tunes some definitely have the potential to become future live favourites.

It was this energy which carried the band through the set tonight as well, as despite various sound problems, mostly involving the loss of vocals in the PA due to Mark Le Gallez' ever energetic and charismatic performance, they came across like a shot of pure adrenalin.

Steve Lynch's guitar veered from scuzzy garage rock, to surf pop, to rockabilly seamlessly and when working in conjunction with Garrick Jones' saxophone made the bands sound deeper than ever. Nick Dodd and Ozzy Austin's rhythms provided a firm foundation for all of this and did their part admirably when given the chance the stand alone, such as in the bass solo on 'Who The Hell Is Frank Wilson?'

The crowd in the narrow space of the Golden Lion fed off the bands raw energy as well, particularly in the second half of the set when Thee Jenerators unleashed their older more familiar material. And by the end a number were dancing wildly along with Mark Le Gallez and the bar had filled up with punters eager to hear the band play.

It was definitely the songs taken from the band’s first album, 'Jenerator X' and 'Burn The House Down' single that really got the audience jumping tonight with particular highlights coming in the form of 'Burn The House Down', 'French Disco', 'Shakin' Shake' and 'Fight The Power'.

If tonight was a warm up show for the band's gig at the Dirty Water Club in London next week then gig goers in England's capital really have something to look forward to as Thee Jenerators are firing on all cylinders. I just hope it's not too long before the band return to a local stage as they really are one of Guernsey's top all round musical acts.
