Remainder 3 - Southern Glitch

Southern Glitch, Remainder 3's 2004 mini-album, provides a refreshing, relaxing and exhilarating mix of British style indie rock and groove based rock 'n' roll in the style of The Queens of the Stone Age with a touch of a punk snarl sneaking in.

The CD opens with 'Somewhere City' a slow building atmospheric sound provided by Nick Dodd’s guitar which is soon joined by a slowly flowing bass line from Pete Riddle and drum parts from Phil Chatfield.

The vocal line on the track then comes in provided by Steve Lynch and Rachael Cumberland which has a very haunting quality to it before the chorus kicks in with a more indie rock 'n' roll sound and ends on a final speedy instrumental.

The haunting style then continues on 'Vauvert' adding a very rich and deep sound before 'All He Wants' brings a speedier sound to the record, more like the bands live performances.

'Fly By Night' brings the speed back down and adds a relaxing; almost prog-rock like sound to the disc built around distorted guitar sounds which build into an almost 'trippy' instrumental finale that then slowly fades to nothing.

'Soothe Me' and 'B. Side' bring the mini-album to a close with a couple of more straight up indie rockers, musically at least. 'Soothe Me' continues with the atmospheric male and female vocal that is the bands trademark sound on this record and ‘B. Side’ shows that the band can get heavy if the need or want arises with a rocky guitar based sound and Rachael’s distinctive vocals that at once contrast the heavy music while complementing it with a slight punk nature to her voice, that has come to the fore in her performances with The Swallows over the past year.

Overall Remainder 3's Southern Glitch is great listen that shows the varying styles this band are capable of and they keep a genre of indie rock that can easily become dull in the wrong hands vibrant and interesting across these 6 tracks.
