University is often the time when you first begin to analyse your attitudes and feelings and therefore has always been regarded as a good place to explore your sexuality. However, if you find that you are not heterosexual then at some point you are going to have to label yourself even if it's just to help other people cope with who you are. | | The Gay and Lesbian helpline is based in Gloucestershire |
The first issue to think about is which 'label' to give yourself. Whether you choose homosexual, bisexual, omnisexual or any other option really depends on how you feel so only you can decide. The next step is to actually tell people and for many young men and women this is one of the hardest things to do. Some people try dropping hints to see if their friends catch on but often a more direct approach is required. Talking to someone who has had experience of 'coming out' is invaluable and the University of Gloucestershire Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Society is the first stop for Gloucestershire students who want news, advice and information about LGBT issues. They offer advice about 'coming out' as well as support and information about health issues. They also provide information on their website about LGBT social events at the University and in the county as a whole. You can contact the society at:
