Talk to us and each other

University is often the time when you first begin to analyse your attitudes and feelings and therefore has always been regarded as a good place to explore your sexuality.

However, if you find that you are not heterosexual then at some point you are going to have to label yourself even if it's just to help other people cope with who you are.

Gay and Lesbian Helpline Gloucestershire
The Gay and Lesbian helpline is based in Gloucestershire

The first issue to think about is which 'label' to give yourself. Whether you choose homosexual, bisexual, omnisexual or any other option really depends on how you feel so only you can decide.

The next step is to actually tell people and for many young men and women this is one of the hardest things to do.

Some people try dropping hints to see if their friends catch on but often a more direct approach is required.

Talking to someone who has had experience of 'coming out' is invaluable and the University of Gloucestershire Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Society is the first stop for Gloucestershire students who want news, advice and information about LGBT issues.

They offer advice about 'coming out' as well as support and information about health issues. They also provide information on their website about LGBT social events at the University and in the county as a whole.

In addition the Gay & Lesbian Friend Helpline (Gloucestershire) is a helpline, founded in 1989, which exists to provide a free and confidential service to people in Gloucestershire and surrounding counties.

They offer support for anyone concerned about their sexuality or gender and take calls from gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, transvestites, transsexuals, their families and friends.

The LGBT society aims to address prejudice and oppression

It is a locally run group that is affiliated to National Friend Ltd, a registered charity, which oversees the operations of many gay and lesbian helplines around the United Kingdom.

The helpline is supported by the Local Health Authority, Social Services, Youth and Community Service and District Councils and the service is provided by trained volunteers in total confidence.

You can also get in touch with the BBC website for Gloucestershire confidentially at [email protected].

If you have any comments or news of gay and lesbian events in the county then please let us know and we will publicise them on this site.
