Joe Ward - age 19 Before: At the start of the series student Joe was a self confessed junk food addict who went to McDonalds 2-3 times a week and hated veggies. Joe had a very negative attitude towards exercise - but he wanted to look into the mirror and see an action hero type! During the series fitness guru Efua Baker put Joe through his paces and was made to complete 200 push ups a day along with a few hundred crunches and sweat breaking run. Joe was sent to New York where he met up with Super Size Me director, Martin Spurlock and who opened Joes eyes to the dangers of a fast food obsessed lifestyle. F-team nutritionist Vicki Edgson made Joe go 'cold-turkey on his return. After: Joe made a dramatic appearance on the last show having shed pounds and presented his new super hero physique the girls could barely keep their hands to themselves! Joe is determined to continue now that the production team and F-team have left and still keeps the competition going between himself and neighbour John Bradley. John Bradley - age 17 Before: John had motivated himself to lose weight before the arrival of the Fat Nation production by cutting out his junk food addiction. He just decided to just go for it, and to not put off exercise. However, he's found that there's no real replacement for crisps which he finds hard to resist. After: He lost a total of 6.5 stone by the end of 2004 (5.5 stone lost before the FN teams arrival). John has made a real effort to get outside more and be more active. He enjoys going to the gym and playing football, and would love to try American football. John lost a further 1st 2lbs by the end of the series - a total of seven stone in 2004! John puts it down to eating more fresh fruit and vegetables and being more active. John has also adapted the advice that fitness expert Efua gave him and is now working with weights to gain some serious muscles!
Sem Komurcugil - age 35 Before: A lack of motivation and confidence was hindering Sems attempts to lose weight. She is currently on maternity leave taking care of baby Alev. During the show and her sessions with the F-Team psychologist, it became evident that Sem had not got over the death of her father 12 years ago. Sem attributed her weight issues to the loss of her dad and felt guilty giving birth to her baby whilst he was dying. The advice was for her to talk about her dad a lot more and to focus on good memories of him. Sem was the biggest shed ever been at the start of Fat Nation. She was advised by the F-Team fitness guru to take up more exercise. After just one session with the boxing gloves and pads Sem was ready to take on the world! | Sem Komurcugil bins the bad food under the camera's watchful eye |
After: Sem has introduced a much more nutritional diet into her eating routine incorporating more veg! She now loves exercise and shes the streets Ms Motivator since the production team packed up. She regularly rings round and text the residents to get them up and working up a sweat walking up and down the streets of Handsworth Wood. Del Derrington - age 37 Before:Del hated exercise and loved chips! As a very busy school nurse, trying to fit healthy eating around a hectic lifestyle was proving difficult. By the time she got in from work the kids had already snaked away their appetites on crisps and biscuits. Daughter Sioned was a notoriously fussy eater the only veggies to pass her lips were peas! Husband Geoff's eating habits were a bit ad hoc. Working late into the evening some nights, he relied on microwaveable ready meals and confessed to snacking on large amounts of cheese late at night. Both Del and Geoff are big wine drinkers and Del was a heavy smoker. The F-team fitness expert introduced Del to Thai boxing. She really got into it and improved her punches dramatically over the sessions Geoff was scared about her increasingly accurate aim! The team psychologist gave Del the moral support to quit smoking. After: Del is still off the cigarettes and says she feels like a million dollars! She and Geoff have cut back on the microwave meals and increased their veggie intake Del says the veggie rack has got so big they may need to buy a bigger house. Del has seen a huge improvement in the kids' concentration. She continues with her Thai boxing faithfully and joins Sem and other residents for regular walks.
