The Drew Crew: Paul

Meet Paul; son of Rob, older brother of Craig, owner of a Mark II Escort and a member of the Drew's, a family of rally drivers and enthusiasts from Gloucestershire.

Unlike younger brother Craig, rally driving is just something Paul Drew from Chalford does in his spare time...

"There's a lot of tutting and a lot of shouting and I get the occasional thump on the thigh to slow down."

"This is just a expensive hobby" says Paul. "I'm not good enough to make a profession out of it so I just enjoy it for the craic.

"I only do a few rally's a year and don't take it serious at all - I can't afford to with my Dad co-driving!"

Paul and dad Rob co-own and run the same car (Mark II Escort) and take it in turns to drive.

Tutting and shouting

The other sits in the navigator seat and gives instructions, which can often lead to some rather interesting father/son moments, as Paul jokes:

"There's a lot of tutting and a lot of shouting and I get the occasional thump on the thigh to slow down. We get on quite well considering."

They have even turned to modern technology to resolve any potential family disputes:

"We've got an onboard camera for the first time ever, so if anything does go wrong between us we've got video evidence of whose fault it is!"

Brilliant

Of all the words you could apply to an experience on a rollercoaster - thrilling, exhilarating, gripping - you could pretty much apply the same to driving a rally car:

"You really can't put it into words, you've got to experience it" says Paul.

"I know we don't go as fast as most of the top boys but when you've got your helmet on you know you can try as hard as you can, nothing's coming the other way, the surface is changing all the time...it's brilliant, you really can't beat it."

Finally, with four members of the Drew family all involved in rally driving, Paul laughingly shares who'll be the one to watch out for...

"It certainly won't be Rob Drew, that's for sure! It'll definitely be Craig Drew I imagine, I think he's going to go on to bigger and better things."

This year at the Wyedean Rally it was Paul's turn to drive!
