Lizzie Curious is a focused woman. She's a DJ, a promoter and a producer and she's making a name for herself in the county and beyond. Lizzie started DJing back in 1999 when she bought herself her first set of decks. "I always loved music,"she said. "I used to play the flute and I still sing and play piano." This one sound guy leant over at a gig and tried to touch with my mixer. He'd never have done that if I'd been a bloke! | | Lizzie Curious |
But 25-year-old Lizzie now makes a very different kind of music than that of her youth. She is the Nu-NRG queen of the scene around Cheltenham with a monthly residency at come and a weekly outing with Funkalicious at Casa playing cool funky house music. She said: "When I'm producing I try to make music that has a lot of energy but also a lot of melody - I think that comes from the music training I've had." Lizzie has collaborated with Ollie Freke and Dan Madams in the recent past and her record The Dark Side with Dan will be released at the beginning of August on Feersum records. Hard work pays off But it's as promoter and resident DJ at come that Lizzie has made her name in the county. "Invariably come is my favourite night to play. It's stressful organising a club night but when you get there and see that all the hard work has paid off it's brilliant. | | "I took this picture at a gig and I think this is what it's all about - hands in the air as far as you can see." |
"Now that come has such a loyal following it's just getting better and better." But what about being a woman in such a male dominated environment? Well Lizzie seems to take it all in her stride. "When I started DJing there were hardly any women on the scene but now there are loads and that can only be a good thing," she said. I don't have an agent at the moment because I don't think anyone's doing as much work for me as I am. | | Lizzie Curious |
"I suppose the biggest drawback being a woman is safety. I usually have someone with me at all the gigs I do - it can be scary walking through an empty car park late at night carrying a box of records." It's a man's world But what really miffs Lizzie off is male chauvinist sound men who interfere with her sound when she's more than capable of sorting out her own levels thank you very much. "This one sound guy leant over at a gig and tried to touch with my mixer. He'd never have done that if I'd been a bloke!" Lizzie feels that DJing has become quite competitive over the last two or three years: "So many people have decks now and everyone wants to be a DJ. | | Mixing it up at come |
"When you think about it it doesn't take that long to learn. Most people can learn to beatmatch in a week but they don't realise that you have to be dedicated to play out regularly and it's hard work." Hard work or not Lizzie loves what she does and has huge and varied plans for the future but for the moment she's a very busy DJ. This month's come is on Friday 25 and Girls on Decks is on August 1, but with a Business Management degree under her belt and a focused approach to her craft I think we'll be hearing a lot more from this NRGetic powerhouse of a DJ. | Lizzie Curious | | Venue | Niche Nightclub, 170 High Street, Cheltenham | | Date | Friday, 1 August 2003 | | Time | 10pm - 3am | | Tickets | £5 |
