The amethyst-blue flowers of this eryngium open on top of sturdy, upright stems in early and midsummer, gradually turning darker blue. It requires free-draining ground and a sunny position. Like all eryngiums, the tiny flowers are packed together in a tight cluster, surrounded by a ruff of spiny bracts. Keep away from the edge of a border if children are present because the spines are very sharp. Excellent in gravel gardens and large herbaceous borders. The flowers last well when cut and can also be dried.
