  1. Goodnight!published at 00:00

Thank you for joining us for this year's live coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest. Dancing gorillas, Romanian yodelling, Dutch sisters, Hungarian belly dancing, horse heads... it's been QUITE a year.

We have now crowned our winner for 2017 - a young man from Portugal called Salvador Sobral with an understated love song called 'Pelos Dios' written by his sister Luisa. Congratulations to the Sobral siblings! What a lovely story.

And well done Lucie Jones, who performed brilliantly but, as we well know, it's a very tough crowd these days.

See you same time next year in Portugal. Bring your sunglasses.

The noise in the press room at Kiev's International Exhibition Centre was deafening as Salvador Sobral from Portugal became his country's first ever Eurovision winner.

To say the 27-year-old is a popular victor is an understatement. Where others brought slick precision sheen and dancing gorillas to the contest, he brought heart, sincerity and a simple, guileless charm.

He also brought something of a sob story - a recent bout of ill health and a serious heart condition. Yet it would be an injustice to him and his songwriting sister Luisa to suggest that sentiment was behind his triumph.

He is, simply put, one of a kind - an antidote of sorts to Eurovision's history of short-lived fads and trashy kitsch, and all the more refreshing for it.

A journalist I know choked up when discussing how he felt when he saw Salvador sing Amar Pelos Dois (Loving for the Both of Us).

Sobral entered the contest with the stated aim of making "people outside of Portugal know and recognise my work." Job done, sir.

  5. Music is not fireworks, music is feelingpublished at 23:39 BST 13 May 2017

Having collected the trophy, Salvador Sobral is now re-performing the winning song 'Amar Pelos Dois (Love For Both)' with his sister Luísa, who wrote the winning song.

    Quote Message

We live in a world of disposable music, fast food music without any content. I think that this will be a victory for music... with people who make music that actually means something. Music is not fireworks, music is feeling.

  6. PORTUGAL WIN EUROVISION 2017published at 23:35 BST 13 May 2017

    337 points go to BULGARIA.

Which means PORTUGAL are our winners - 376 points in the public vote cements victory for Salvador Sobral's gentle ballad. It takes them to 758 points overall, with Bulgaria well back on 615.

It's their first win after a 53 year wait.

The United Kingdom finish in a disappointing 15th place, skewered by the public vote.

  12. The public vote is imminentpublished at 23:26 BST 13 May 2017

And it's going to take something pretty sizeable to knock Portugal off top spot.

The top 3 as it stands:

    1. Portugal (382 points)

    2. Bulgaria (278 points)

    3. Sweden (218 points)

  13. New systempublished at 23:26 BST 13 May 2017

Now that the jury are votes are done, we'll be announcing the televote SEPARATELY just like we did last year in Stockholm...bite your nails, bite EVERYONE'S NAILS.

  14. And finally...published at 23:24 BST 13 May 2017

...for the jury results anyway, it's the points from Ukraine.

In spite of a distinct absence of life jackets in their boat-based performance, Belarus take 12.

    10 points go to Portugal

    8 Points for Hungary

The UK is on 99 points.

  15. Results: Czech Republicpublished at 23:23 BST 13 May 2017

    12 to Portugal

10 for Australia (double figures for Isaiah!)

5 for the UK - thanks Czechs!

FYI Germany is still second last on a meagre 3 points.

  16. Croatia callingpublished at 23:22 BST 13 May 2017

The Bulgarians get another 10. Who will get the 12 I wonder, plenty of shared borders to chose from... It's hitherto unheralded Hungary, their neighbours to the north. Portugal's lead is now almost a hundred.

  17. UK... what does our home jury say?published at 23:22 BST 13 May 2017

The Ukranian hosts have very kindly reminded Katrina (she of the Waves), who's presenting the UK's results tonight, that she won Eurovision in 1997 - the year one of them was born.

    Anyway, to business:

12 points for Portugal as the UK jury hops on the bandwagon.

    10 points for Australia

    8 points for Sweden

  18. Poland's points are in...published at 23:22 BST 13 May 2017

    12 to Portugal (yet again)

    10 for Belgium

8 for The Netherlands (hurray for the Vol Sisters!)

    7 for Australia

5 for LUCIE JONES AND THE UK.

  19. Results: the Belgian jurypublished at 23:20 BST 13 May 2017

We have ploughed through 37 of 42 juries. Now it's Brussels. Deux points for Lucie Jones, but douse points to third placed Sweden.

    Spain currently has nul points.

  20. Slovenia's votepublished at 23:19 BST 13 May 2017

12 points go to Portugal, but who cares about that because...

    10 points for the UK!

    8 points for Bulgaria, too.

But more importantly, 10 points for the UK.

    Did I mention that?
