The Charlatans formed in Manchester in 1989 and quickly established themselves as one of the biggest bands in the UK. Over their 25 year career the band have scored 22 Top 40 hits in the UK alone and also charted in the U.S.
Synonymous with the ‘Madchester’ scene, they were influenced by the Stones, jangle pop, and funk. 'The Only One I Know’ became a monster hit in 1990, climbing into the top ten and becoming the group's signature single. The band's debut album, ‘Some Friendly’, was released in the same year, debuting at #1.
After releasing two more albums (and experiencing a dip in popularity), the Charlatans re-entered the front rank of British rock in 1995 with their self-titled LP and hit single ‘Just When you’re Thinkin’ Things Over’. Prior to the release of the eponymous album, Tim Burgess sang on the Chemical Brothers' ‘Life Is Sweet’.
The band has not been without tragedy – keyboard Rob Collins was killed in a car crash in 1996 while the group were recording their fifth album and last year saw the passing of drummer Jon Brookes. The band were joined in tribute over the loss of Jon Brookes at the Royal Albert Hall by James Dean Bradfield, Liam Gallagher and members of the Vaccines and New Order in a tribute gig in October last year.
The Charlatans are preparing to release their 12th studio album ‘International Space Station’ which features recordings of their late drummer.
