Scots singer Annie Lennox, who along with Eurythmics partner Dave Stewart recorded a song with Aretha in 1985, called her "peerless".

"Superlatives are often used to describe astonishing artists," she added. "But in my view even superlatives seem insufficient. Everyone who loved Aretha will be saying little prayers of gratitude, appreciation and respect for the musical life force that enriched our lives."

Their single Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves, written by Stewart was nominated for a Grammy.

Apparently the band had originally intended to duet with Tina Turner, who was unavailable at the time, so they approached Aretha instead.

US R&B singer Alexander O'Neill has described the late singer as both an "icon" and a "perfectionist".

Speaking on the BBC News TV Channel, O'Neill said: "All the people that she influenced... she's just an icon.

"I never got the chance to get in the studio with her but we worked around some of the same people and all the stories I've ever got about Aretha Franklin was she was perfectionist."

He added: "She knew what she wanted when she got in the studio and she demanded it from everyone.

"She was truly the Queen of Soul."

The singer also noted the importance of Aretha's involvement with the US civil rights movement in the 1960s.

Rock 'n' roll star Liam Gallagher has tweeted his respects for the late soul star, writing: "What a voice x".

Paloma Faith added: "Rather than commiserate your death I will be celebrating your life for the next few weeks. Love you forever xxx"

The British singer has paid an emotional tribute to Aretha, who performed a benefit for his Aids charity in 2017.

"The loss of Aretha Franklin is a blow for everybody who loves real music: Music from the heart, the soul and the Church. Her voice was unique, her piano playing underrated – she was one of my favourite pianists," he wrote on Instagram.

    Quote Message

I was fortunate enough to spend time with her and witness her last performance – a benefit for the Elton John AIDS Foundation at St John The Divine Cathedral. She was obviously unwell, and I wasn’t sure she could perform. But Aretha did and she raised the roof. She sang and played magnificently, and we all wept.

Aretha was "the greatest soul artist of all time," he added.

"I adored her and worshipped her talent. God bless her.

"The Queen is dead. Long live the Queen."
