The last award of the night has gone to an absolute pop legend.

A rather nervous-looking Ed Sheeran attempted to introduce the US singer, then gave up and walked away sheepishly.

The five times Grammy winner responded: "Thank you. And Ed - you are absolutely kicking ass my friend."

Lionel then went on to offer some advice to the songwriters in the room about the importance of taking risks and not listening to the naysayers, after R&B DJs back in the day warned him against "copping out" by writing pop songs. while others also warned him that black guys shouldn't sing waltzes.

All I'm going to say is, there is a time in your career when you have to take major chances.

He also joked that Eric Clapton - a few tables away - had offered to buy him a drink... 15 years ago.

    "Tonight we get to hang!"

Lionel began his career in Motown act The Commodores and went on to become a solo star with hits like All Night Long and Hello - as anyone who ever been to a wedding or birthday party will testify.

They might be Dancing on the Ceiling of the Grosvenor tonight yet, if Eric fancies it.

As a special Throwback Thursday (did you think we had forgotten?), here is Lionel in his best red eighties styling with that very song.

    Thirty-two years old this year.

And we thought we had a good song collection.

She usually lurks in the shadows penning pop hits but today the spotlight has fallen on Kathy Dennis.

Kathy co-wrote Britney Spears' Toxic, Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head - the second biggest single of the noughties - and S Club 7's Never Had a Dream Come True.

    Is that enough?

OK, one more for good luck; Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl and I Liked It.

You can look up the rest yourselves or we'll be here all night.

    A tearful Cathy said:

I really hope that I can inspire other women. I didn't come out of school with great qualifications, I decided I was going to be a singer and be in music.

"I found myself on a school trip and we had nothing else to do so I went into the bathroom with a boy and had an epiphany.

"And it's been all uphill since then."

Blimey - is it getting hot in here?

The legendary Irish folk rocker arrived on stage - pushed in a wheelchair - to loud cheers all around.

During a slightly mumbled speech he humbly raised a glass to his old band The Pogues.

"I'm just the band leader and a songwriter".

The award panel clearly believe that Shane is much more than that.

So Stormzy kind of give the game away a few minutes earlier (scroll down).

Ed received his award from legendary guitarist Eric Clapton and described the Ivors as "the only award show that I really care about".

Hope the Brits bosses aren't reading this.

He added: "I actually started playing guitar because of this man behind me."

He then returned the shout-out to Stormzy for his album win.

"What a lad!," grinned the flame-haired singer.

You're not a bad lad yourself Ed.

The grime superstar can now add an Ivor to his Brit Award for debut Gang Signs & Prayer.

    "Yesssss!" beamed the rapper.

"Very, very, very, happy right now!"

The MC beat Everything Everything's A Fever Dream and Moonshine Freeze by This is the Kit.

He gave the second big-up of the night to producer Fraser T Smith and also "my brother" Ed Sheeran.

"Randomly even though he's not on the album... that's someone who I'm always striving to be like... that's my benchmark.

"Every song I write I'm like 'would Ed do that?'

    "That's my brother."

He signed off with a personal message for Ed on the front row.

"You got a songwriter [award] but I'm coming for you next year my boy!"

    Aw, you guys...

But wait a minute, Ed didn't win that y... ahhh.

'The bard of Barking' has just been given his award by Labour deputy leader Tom Watson.

"He is my hero," said the MP, who then attempted to compare the singer to his own boss, Jeremy Corbyn, but it seems the room are in no mood to cheer politicians today.

Billy said: "It's a great privilege to win in the same year as Dave for something so political and powerful,

"It really fired up my spirit somewhat."

  9. Ivor Novellos: Magnificent Elbow take home an awardpublished at 15:44 BST 31 May 2018

One of the big ones of the afternoon too.

When he's not busy cleaning the underneath of his motorbike in the finale of Peter Kay's Car Share, Guy Garvey (above, centre) and his pals are pretty adept at writing a powerful chorus.

His band's Magnificent (She Says) has just beaten Mercury-winning Sampha's (No One Knows Me) Like the Piano and the Everything Everything track Can't Do to the award for best song - lyrically and musically.

I mean, what else is there in a song?

Guy confessed to their award presenter Mel C; "We used to have a poster of you in our flat Mel.

"And me and [bandmate] Pete both fancied you the most... an award in itself."

    ElbowImage source, PA
    Image caption,

Pete (l) and Mark try not to stand too close to Guy

Apparently the music to the track was written by the band while Guy was away on honeymoon.

He revealed that he returned to add his vocals after he and his wife had conceived their first child on the trip.

"First time!," boasted the proud Mancunian singer, drink in hand.

    "Just saying!"

    TMI Guy. TMI.

He met the group's bassist Martin Kemp when they both appeared in the Million Dollar Quartet stage show. Wild played Elvis Presley in the 2016 UK tour.

Hadley revealed last July that he had left the band.

Ross was born five years after Spandau had a number one hit with Gold.

Not an award you hear about traditionally but don't underestimate the power of getting your music on a good computer game.

Gamers don't only stay indoors staring at screens, they often love music too.

The award has gone to action role-play game Horizon Zero Dawn, composed by Joris de Man, Joe Henson and Alexis Smith.

A big congrats to the 90-year-old Edinburgh born, US resident.

The composer, who campaigned to get every primary school student playing instruments, said on screen; "It's one of life's privileges to do what I love doing for a living."

On stage, she added "music is basic to the human spirit" and that the continued popularity of famous classical composers "proves the power of classical music".

She then confessed she still sends her tracks via "snail mail" and doesn't really understand how the tracks sometimes come together via email!

Neither do we Thea, don't worry.

The composer then gave special thanks to the BBC Scottish symphony orchestra, who performed some of her orchestral works when she was first starting out.

Dave brought "world class" producer Fraser T Smith on to the stage with him drawing a big "brap" from the direction of Stormzy's table.

  18. Ivor Novellos 2018: Ed Sheeran is about to go up against himselfpublished at 14:53 BST 31 May 2018

    Ed SheeranImage source, PA

The show is about to get underway.

The stars are all fed on cod and mash and - in some cases - on the wine, but this is not the place for any bad behaviour.

Ed Sheeran, who didn't bother with the red carpet, faces stiff competition this year from... well... himself, mainly.

The singer has been nominated twice in the most performed work category for his songs Shape of You and Castle on the Hill.

The aforementioned Stormzy and Everything Everything have also received two nominations each - in the song categories and for best album.

Only one female performer - This is the Kit - has been nominated for one of the main gongs at this year's prestigious songwriting awards.

Legendary cockney protest singer Billy Bragg is in the house.

If you consider the five-star Gosvenor House in London's Park Lane a house, that is.

He's officially a Stormzy fan but, between us, the grime star hadn't actually heard of the folk rocker.

For all we know they could be bonding at the bar right now.

"Grime is where the edge is now," Billy told MNL.

"The reason for that is the people who make that kind of music are still marginalised by mainstream culture.

"In the 20th Century, all young people were marginalised by mainstream culture as we didn't have any access to the daily newspapers, so the only way we had to talk to each other and our parents' generation was to write songs.

There are still people who are marginalised in the digital age though and making great music is the only way they can get into your timeline and my timeline. So I think that's why that type of music still has the edge.

The 60-year-old said he still believes in the power of a good protest or love song but that it's just one of many means of communication between kids these days.

"In the 21st Century, I don't think there is so much protest music.

"I think the reason for that is music has lost its vanguard role in youth culture.

"When I was 18, if I wanted to talk about the world I had to learn to play the guitar, write songs and do gigs.

Now if I'm a 19-year-old and I'm angry about something, there's a lot of platforms I can use to get my ideas out there.

"In some ways, playing music - not everyone can do that so it's a high bar and not everyone gets to speak up.

"I'm very privileged to have not had to work for some other so and so because of my songwriting and I want to see other young people able to do that.

The kids at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC got surprise when the rocker made a surprise appearance between two sold out shows at a local venue.

Accompanied by backing musicians, Jack performed outdoors in the school’s atrium.

Watch above as he encouraged teenagers to join him during a rendition of White Stripes' classic Seven Nation Army.

Apparently his performance lasted 45 minutes and took place during the school’s lunch break.

Jack played a free show at a London pub in March.
