Charles Manson, the cult leader of the Manson Family, who directed his followers to commit a string of brutal murders in 1969, was one of the most reviled figures in American culture.

A grifter who'd spent most of his adult life in jail, he orchestrated a killing spree with the intention of sparking a race war.

The Beach Boys re-worked one of his songs on their 1969 album 20/20 and Neil Young, who met the murderer, was impressed by what he heard.

"He had this kind of music that nobody else was doing," he told rock writer Bill Flanagan., external

Swedish artists including Robyn (above), First Aid Kit and Zara Larsson have added their names to a letter, signed by nearly 2,000 women, saying they have experienced sexual assault and harassment during their career.

The anonymous personal testimonies include allegations of rape and attempted rape, by musicians and music business executives.

“These stories do not describe a few events distributed over many years,” reads the letter.

“These are excerpts from hundreds of testimonies, all of which took place in what we call the music industry. They depict what is going on every day.

“If we report these events [the result] is words speaking against words… we tie our fists into our pockets and rarely mention [these incidents]. Silence culture prevails.

"But we will no longer be silent… We demand zero tolerance against sexual exploitation and violence.

  7. Katy Perry awarded £1m in compensation over convent legal battlepublished at 14:04 GMT 20 November 2017

    Katy PerryImage source, Reuters

A businesswomen has been ordered to pay the pop star and the Archdoicese of Los Angeles the money after a judge ruled she had intentionally interfered with the singer's attempts to buy a property that was once a convent.

Katy had attempted to buy the building for $14.5m (£8.6m) to move into and the deal had been approved by the Los Angeles' archbishop.

The Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary have owned the property for more than forty years but it has been uninhabited for several years.

Several of the elderly nuns who still stayed there voiced their objection to the singer, based on a dislike of her image and music. Katy had met with them to assuage their concerns.

Restaurateur Dana Hollister had then stepped in and attempted to buy the property.

Katy and the archdiocese are still working out the terms of the sale and it still needs permission from the Vatican.

  8. Debbie Harry buzzing as Blondie bring UK tour to a closepublished at 13:42 GMT 20 November 2017

Rock 'n' Roll queen Debbie Harry urged fans to help save the bees (and in turn the planet), in between smashing out post punk/new wave bangers on the last stop of their UK tour at London's Brixton Academy on Friday night.

Debbie, who sported an ethereal white cape bearing the slogan "stop [messing with] the planet", declared; "sometimes there comes at a time in our lives when we have to take some responsibility".

The New Yorkers - who paused their mid-set performance of new song Fragments to take in the applause of their adoring fans - have been using their suitably-named latest album Pollinator to help raise proceeds for Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, as Debbie explains.

“Basically, my motives for supporting pollinators is survival, survival of us all, survival of the human race”.

To bee or not to bee

The 72-year-old continued to defy the gods by effortlessly moving around the stage and belting out pitch-perfect new tracks and hits from the likes of seminal 1978 album Parallel Lines.

Chris Stein, who is not far behind Debbie at 67, did the same on guitar.

Arriving on stage to the sound of buzzing and wearing a bee's mask Debbie and the gang launched into One Way or Another and followed it up with their classic cover of The Nerves' Hanging on the Telephone.

The roof nearly came of during Call Me and extended version of Atomic, which saw relatively recent recruit [2010] Tommy Kessler shred the guitar front of stage.

The band then merged Heart of Glass into Donna Summer's I Fee Love, before returning for an encore which finished in glorious style with Dreaming...

Sadly no Sunday Girl but then it was Friday night after all.

While work remains in the fight to the save the bees, swarms of Blondie fans were at least sent away in rapture, with the reminder that...

Musicians and artists have lined up to condemn quotes Morrissey gave to a German newspaper in which he suggested Kevin Spacey had been "attacked unnecessarily" (scroll down).

In a tweet, which we had to edit heavily, Shirley Manson of Garbage accused the former Smiths singer of having "lost the **** plot".

The singer suggested victims had been driven by opportunism.

"I hate rape... But in many cases, one looks at the circumstances and thinks that the person who is considered a victim is merely disappointed," he said.

Other artists including singer-songwriter Nadine Shah, director and producer Judd Apatow and comedian Matt Lucas also criticised Morrissey's stance.

Despite being unavailable on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, Reputation still became 2017's fastest-selling record by a female artist and went straight to number one on Friday evening.

Tay Tay's third UK number one also notched up the sixth-highest opening week sales of the year to date, according to the Official Chart Company.

Not bad considering she has has yet to give any interviews about the new album over here or make any UK TV appearances.

We're sure those are coming soon...

Taylor's album failed to match the commercial performance of albums by Take That and her pal Ed Sheeran (who happens to appear on album track End Game) though.

In the singles chart, Camila Cabello topped the rankings for a third week in a row, with Havana staving off a threat from Rita Ora's latest single Anywhere.

Eminem scored his 28th top 10 single with Walk On Water, which features vocals from Beyonce, while Elbow made their first chart appearance since 2012 with their Beatles cover Golden Slumbers, which soundtracks this year's John Lewis Christmas advert.

  14. Dave Grohl and other rockers pay tribute to AC/DC's Malcolm Youngpublished at 10:59 GMT 20 November 2017

    Malcolm YoungImage source, Getty Images

Some sad news from the weekend that AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young had died aged 64 after suffering from dementia.

The musician has retired from the band in 2014 after being diagnosed with the disease.

His bandmate, singer Brian Johnson said, "I can't believe he's gone... he never liked the celebrity side of fame, he was too humble for that.

"He was the man who created AC/DC because he said there was no rock and roll out there."

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl wrote on Instagram said he was inspired by the 1980 AC/DC concert movie Let There Be Rock: "That film, a live AC/DC performance from Paris, 1979 is everything that live and roll should be. Sweaty. Loose. Loud.

"A relentless performance from the perfect band. It was the first time I lost control to music. The first time I wanted to be in a band. I didn’t want to play my guitar anymore. I wanted to smash it.

"Thank you, Malcolm for the songs, and the feel, and the cool, and the years of losing control to your rock and roll."

Guns 'N Roses also made a live musical tribute to Malcolm...

    Awkward.

The British star appeared on the show during the blind auditions (above) performing her own hit single Your Song.

Presumably it was designed as a bit of a prank. However, things went a little south when the judges failed to recognise her when their chairs swiveled around.

What's your name? asked one (in German). After Rita initially played along, saying she was a "26 year old aspiring musician from London," she was told her performance sounded like the original song.

Even after she introduced herself as Rita Ora, one judge asked, external: "You're kidding us? Are you some kind of double?"

Rita then sort of compounded things when she went on to talk about having been on the panel in the UK version of the show.

To her credit, Rota took it all on the chin.

  16. Morrissey defends Kevin Spacey over sexual harassment casepublished at 10:15 GMT 20 November 2017

    MorrisseyImage source, Getty Images

No stranger to a controversial view or ten, Morrissey has voiced his support for disgraced actor Kevin Spacey.

Spacey, along with producer Harvey Weinstein and other men in Hollywood have been accused of serial sexual harassment.

Now, Morrissey has told German news site Spiegel Online, external: “It doesn’t quite ring true to me, and it seems to me like he’s been unnecessarily attacked."

Speaking about Spacey's accuser, who was 14 at the time of the alleged 1986 incident, Morrissey, went on: “You have to wonder where the boy’s parents were.

“You have to assume that the boy had an inkling of what might possibly happen.

    Quote Message

I mean, I don’t know about you, but in my youth I was never in situations like that. Never.

"I was always aware of where things could go, and if you’re in somebody’s bedroom, you have to be aware of where it could lead to.’"

In the interview Moz also appeared to accuse the victims of other cases of acting out of opportunism.

He added: "You also must wonder if people know exactly what’s happening, and they go along with it, but then when it’s happened, they find that they’re either really embarrassed or they didn’t really like it, so then they go reverse it and say, ‘I was ambushed, I was taken by surprise, I was dragged into the room.’

    Quote Message

But if the incident had gone very very well, and they had enjoyed it and it had led to an incredible career, they wouldn’t mention it.

"I hate to be that cynical because I hate rape and I hate attack and I hate sexual situations that’s forced on a person against their will, but in many many situations you look at the circumstances and you think that the person who is called the victim is merely disappointed.”
