Tomorrow night sees the world premiere of Liam Scarlett’s Frankenstein at the Royal Ballet in London.

The score was written by Lowell Lieberman, one of America's most frequently performed and recorded living composers. But, he told BBC Radio 3's In Tune, his job was made more difficult because he was writing in the dark, with no idea of how the ballet would be staged.

"It really was onerous," Lieberman told Sean Rafferty.

    Quote Message

He [Liam] provided me with a scenario which was basically the plot and timings - so he gave five minutes for the pas de deux - but within that I had no idea of the movement or the moment-to-moment action. I had to write the music imagining what would happen. So that was very challenging.

    Lowell Lieberman

Luckily, it all came together in the end.

    Quote Message

When I finally saw the rehearsals with Liam’s choreography, I thought ‘wow’. His choreography really does complete the music.

    Lowell Lieberman

You can hear the full interview, as well as an excerpt from the rehearsals, by listening to In Tune on the BBC iPlayer. Lieberman appears about one hour into the show.

  6. Lemmy to be honoured at Metal Hammer Golden God Awardspublished at 15:37 BST 3 May 2016

    LemmyImage source, Reuters

Late Motorhead legend Lemmy will be honoured with a special one-off performance from the two surviving members of the band at the Metal Hammer Golden God Awards on 13 June.

Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee from Motorhead will be joined by British rock band Saxon to perform the tribute, billed as A Salute to Lemmy. Saxon's Bill Byford revealed why he wanted to be involved:

    Quote Message

Lemmy was a great friend and he always supported the band, as we did Motorhead, through ups and downs. We were touring with them when he died so to be able to honour him at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods is a great opportunity to say goodbye.

    Biff Byford

Lemmy Kilminster died after a short battle with cancer last December.

Alexander Milas, editor in chief of Metal Hammer, told the BBC Lemmy was one of the "most iconic frontmen of all time" and it would be an "emotional night".

    Quote Message

The really sad passing of Lemmy Kilmister, it's left a gaping void in our world. He was larger than life, seemingly immortal and it was just a passing that gave us all real pause. Everyone who's ever enjoyed rock or metal music probably associates it with Lemmy, because he was just the living personification of what it was all about to be rock and roll. It's just going to be a way for us to say goodbye and celebrate the man that he was.

    Alexander Milas

Other special guests for the performance are due to be announced.

She's also claimed issues involving her US visa application are preventing her from being able to promote or perform her music in America. Watch this space...

  9. Gregory Porter on Britain's love of soulpublished at 15:09 BST 3 May 2016

Gregory Porter performs for Strictly Come Dancing

Californian soul singer Gregory Porter has been speaking to the BBC about his love for the UK - including playing Glastonbury and getting recognised on the streets.

He says the acceptance from British fans has been "extraordinary".

    Quote Message

Now, when I walk the streets of London, cab drivers scream out my name. It's a beautiful thing and it happens a lot.

    Gregory Porter

He also talked about his hit collaboration with dance duo Disclosure.

    Quote Message

They didn't try to compartmentalise me and tell me what to sing. They were like 'What would you like to say? How do you want a dance song to feel?'. That's why I put the song in my live set, and on my record, because I like the message of irrepressible love finding its way in a dance song with a heavy backbeat as well as a jazz style.

Interestingly, none of the material on the four disc collection appeared on the original album - which is being re-released separately.

Rolling Stone has an exclusive clip of the opening track, an energetic reading of Come Running from 1970's Moondance album. Listen to it here, external.

The show, on 15 August, will feature tracks from Murphy's forthcoming album Take Her Up To Monto, which was written concurrently with last year's Mercury Prize-nominated Hairless Toys.

Normally, when you hear that a musician has announced their new album via billboard, it means they've placed an advert in venerable US music magazine Billboard. Not in James Blake's case...

The musician has been plastering the artwork for his third album over walls in Brooklyn and London - then sharing the images on social media.

Called The Colour in Anything, the sleeve has been drawn by Roald Dahl's illustrator of choice, Quentin Blake (no relation).

Last year, the star told Esquire magazine the record would feature collaborations with Kanye West and Bon Iver. He also appears on Beyonce's new album, on a duet called Forward.

  17. Can you Handel it?published at 12:36 BST 3 May 2016

    GF Handel

Here's an ambitious plan: The Göttingen International Handel festival wants to stage all 42 of Handel's operas in the space of a fortnight.

The feat will be attempted at the festival's 100th anniversary in 2020 - although not all of the works will be performed as written, with readings and film screenings part of the progamme, director Tobias Wolff told The Salzburger Nachrichten, external newspaper.

"We have already started thinking about funding," he added. "We do not know if we can get it financed, but the vision is there."

Held in the German university town of Göttingen, the festival is one of the highlights of the classical calendar, with a resident orchestra, the FestspielOrchester Göttingen, that's considered to have reached the pinnacle of baroque performance.

So... Busted are back! After announcing their reunion in November last year, the newly reformed band have just unveiled a new "different" new single, telling followers: "We wrote Coming Home just for you - the fans who have been with us since the beginning."

It's certainly a departure from the airbrushed rock of Air Hostess and Year 3000 - with a brooding, mid-tempo groove and a buzzing synth hook.

There's a lyric video over on YouTube, external (we can't embed it here due to the nature of the lyrics).
