Sorry folks, that PPAP song is really stuck in our brains (scroll down, if you dare).

So that was the day that brought us: new music and videos by Coldplay, The Horrors and Arcane Roots; a chat with folk singer Lisa Hannigan; Neil Hannon on his problem with modern pop music; Stormzy's Love Island chaos; Paul Weller on the early years; and the woman who's taking on Beyonce at her own game.

Back tomorrow with some live festival tips from The Lemon Twigs.

  2. Viral hit adopted by UNpublished at 15:41 BST 18 July 2017

Sorry. Just sorry. There's an earworm coming - and you're not going to thank us for it.

Piko-Taro, the fictional pop artist created by Japanese comedian Kazuhito Kosaka - whose Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen, external ditty went viral last year, has been enlisted as part of a new publicity campaign for the United Nations.

The revamped version of P-P-A-P promotes 17 goals to save the globe.

Never mind saving the globe, fitting those goals on top of that beat is enough of a challenge. As is saying 'Sustainable Development Goals' when you're Japanese.

  3. Hip-hop overtakes rock among US music fanspublished at 15:35 BST 18 July 2017

Future and Kendrick Lamar both have hits on the list of this year's 10 most streamed songs

Hip-hop and R&B are now the most popular types of music in the US, reports Forbes, external.

For the first time since Nielsen Music started measuring music consumption, rock is no longer top dog.

According to latest figures released in Neilsen's annual mid-year report, R&B and hip-hop are now responsible for 25.1% of all music consumption in the US., while rock claims 23%.

And it's all down to streaming.

While rock music accounts for 40% of all album sales, the number of records bought is in decline - and streaming is growing significantly. And that is making all the difference.

In fact, R&B/hip-hop is almost as popular on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music than the next two most popular genres (rock and pop) combined.

At least seven of the most popular songs, external on streaming platforms in 2017 are in the hip-hop genre.

Ed Sheeran is not one one of them.

The Horrors have delved into the dark side with the visuals for their new music video for the single Machine.

It's been taken from their new album V, which comes out in September.

Ironically, despite the title, this is not a video to watch while operating heavy machinery.

  5. Lisa Hannigan: Everyone has their own internal pressurepublished at 15:13 BST 18 July 2017

    Paul Glynn
    Music News LIVE reporter

    Lisa HanniganImage source, Latitude

More from this weekend's Latitude festival now, where another Irish performer Lisa Hannigan brought the BBC Music Stage tent to a standstill with her hypnotic and beautifully-arranged folk performance on Sunday afternoon.

The set featured rootsy songs from her latest album At Swim, including Anahorish; a Seamus Heaney poem set to music.

Afterwards we grabbed a quick word with Lisa before she dashed off into the woods to see her guitarist John Smith perform his own solo acoustic set.

Lisa said: "It was so nice - very relaxed, in classic Latitude fashion.

"Normally festivals are stressful, but it was beautiful in that tent with loads of lovely people there. I bloody loved it!

"In the tent, it feels more like a gig, outdoors you're competing with lots of other things.

"With some music you need silence - and the quiet bits in between - to give the songs structure. Because we were in a tent, it was grand."

Hannigan, who began her career singing on Damien Rice's records, is now three records into her own solo career and well versed in the "defiant fun" of the festival circuit crowd.

    Quote Message

I feel like festivals have always been about defiantly having fun. That's a part of why they exist.

"Music is a big strong thing. I don't know if it takes you away completely, but it exists as an important thing on it's own."

While she dazzled the Henham Park audience, Lisa however does not expect to be knocking Justin Bieber or Ed Sheeran out of the charts anytime soon

She added: "I'm not gonna be bothering the charts - I'm a folk singer.

"I don't think, 'I was nearly in the charts, then Ed Sheeran messed it up for me'! I just feel like the whole idea of the charts now is a bit passe."

    Image caption,

After Ed's appearance on Game of Thrones last night, surely anything is possible.

The singer said she hoped to see more women on the festival circuit in future too.

"I work with a lot of women: my tour manager is a woman, my manager, my PR people, sometimes I play with women in the band.

"Sometimes I've seen on festival posters, when you take away the men's names, it looks sparse.

"I hope that it's changing but it doesn't put added pressure on me. Everyone has their own internal pressure."

She added: "But I would like to see more ladies play."

    Lia HanniganImage source, Getty Images

Lisa, whose favourite act of the weekend was fellow Irish band Saint Sister, said she will "probably start thinking about writing a new record" soon.

As for new songs, it depends which side of bed she gets out of in the morning.

"If it's going well, I'll write a song in 15 minutes.

"But it sometimes takes a few months before that 15 minutes presents itself. You just have to wait and see."

Well just like Andy Warhol almost said Lisa; everyone gets their 15 minutes, sooner or later.

Check out the Power of Stormzy

The grime artist stepped off a plane and tweeted that he was desperate for info on TV's Love Island (we pass no judgement...) - only to discover that he was responsible for a major row between Love Island couple Olivia Attwood and Chris Hughes.

The altercation began during a game when the islanders were read tweets from viewers, and they had to guess who the tweets were about.

It included one from Stormzy, suggesting Chris was too good for Olivia - and triggered a full-on hissy fit.

Taylor Swift has been reportedly being transported in a huge suitcase from her Tribecca apartment into her truck. A fleet of cars including two large cadillacs and three suv's arrive at Tailor Swift's apartment in Tribecca to move a large suitcase from apartment to truck. Almost a dozen of Taylor Swift security guards were present to move this package carefully as Taylor Swift remains to be unseen for a long time.

Now, we know Taylor is slim - and sometimes a little camera-shy - but surely this is step too far. Even Katy Perry wouldn't send her packing like this...

  16. The Divine Comedy have 'a problem' with modern pop musicpublished at 11:27 BST 18 July 2017

    Paul Glynn
    Music News LIVE reporter

    The Divine ComedyImage source, Latitude

Now Neil Hannon knows a thing or two about writing a pop hit.

With his band The Divine Comedy, the 46-year-old Irishman has been chronicling the landscape with songs about topics as varied as public transport, indie discos and millionaire French heiresses.

So, he's in a good position to pass comment on the state of the UK Top 40.

Warning: Look away now modern chart music fans.

Speaking backstage before his show at Latitude Festival on Sunday, for which he was clad in full-on Napoleonic gear, he said: "I have a bit of a problem with the sound of modern ultra pop records... and I love pop music!

"I make slightly weird pop music, but it generally last three minutes and has choruses.

    "My problem is the sound.

    Quote Message

It all sounds very one dimensional. Like having a nail driven into you forehead...

"I have a big problem with auto-tune on vocals too.

"I know it's not for me, but i still get annoyed that it's not for me.

"MAKE POP MUSIC FOR ME! Ha ha."

He added: "I don't know whether it's getting older or generally the charts mean less to kids.

"Maybe I'm just lost in the wilderness listening to my Petula Clark records! Maybe I should be collaborating with Mr Weeknd...I know who that is, you know..."

Perhaps all three of them should get together. We'd certainly give that a spin on New Music Friday here on MNL.

    Okay Neil - let's talk

Neil can still be found these days "constantly writing songs" - though not love or break-up songs ("there's been enough of them written by other people") or else hanging at home throwing a ball at the dogs and trying to usher pigs out of the kitchen due to his 'other half's' work with animal rescue.

    He's less keen...

"We end up with a lot of animals. I love to look at them but I'm not too hands on.

"I just like to sit in a room and write songs.

"I would do it all day if I was allowed but life gets in the way and you have to go and be sociable with people, or play festivals and promote your record."

While his attempts to come across as a misanthrope are unconvincing, Neil's genuine love of writing and performing is still evidently there.

    "Once I'm here it's lovely.

    The Divine ComedyImage source, Latitude

"When I'm on stage is probably when I'm truly happiest. Who wouldn't like all the adulation.

"I probably wouldn't write music if I didn't like sharing it.

"Its just all the rubbish in between home and here that's so boring."

Before leaving for the stage, the descendant of two generations of clergymen promised not to "go all Bono" on the Suffolk crowd.

"I've had to guard against that."

Once the festival season is over Neil and the band will hit the road again for their own UK and Ireland tour in November/December.

You can listen again to a full Jo Whiley Latitude special show from Radio 2 last night here.

Ringo celebrated his birthday with a celebration attended by director David Lynch (l) and Edgar Winter, among others

"I’m proud of the music, we the Beatles made and that I’m still making," Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr tells Billboard's Andy Meek, in an interview to mark his 77th birthday.

“The great thing with the Beatles’ music - we worked very hard, and it’s still relevant today,” he says.

“Those songs John and Paul wrote, and the music George and I and John and Paul played - that’s what makes me proud. We worked very hard to make those tracks, and every sort of couple of years, a new batch of teenagers get into it. You know what I mean? It’s relevant year after year. It just amazes me.”

"I’m still doing what was my dream at 13, and that’s playing," says Starr, who will be reunited with fellow Beatle Paul McCartney on his forthcoming album, Give More Love - released this September.

And not only is he still recording and writing, the drummer even manages his own Twitter account.

"Twitter, that’s the one I do myself,” he tells Billboard.

    But with age comes wisdom.

“I do it at a reasonable hour. Sometime in the afternoon, when I’ve been up for a while."

A drama is set in 1986 New York City and chronicles the rise of an ambitious bi-racial 16-year-old girl, an aspiring singer-songwriter who survived a difficult childhood to become the biggest-selling female music artist of all time.

Yep, the story of Mariah Carey’s rise to stardom is being told in a new series being developed by the US network Starz.

According to a report in Deadline, Mariah herself will be executive producing alongside The Revenant producer - and director of the Rush Hour franchise - Brett Ratner.

No casting news as yet but who would be your choice? Let us know @BBCMusic on Twitter.

Mariah's relationship with the big and small screen has been patchy at best - starting with the critically mauled Glitter in 2001 - itself a semi-biopic.

To be fair, he did say he was planning on quitting Twitter last month - but then changed his mind. Just promised to limit his reading material to Harry Potter.

" I haven't quit anything, I'm just not reading anything, except Harry Potter," he wrote on Instagram on 5 July.

So Voldemort he can handle, but it seems an evening with Lord Walder Frey finished him off.

The singer has completely shut down his account on Twitter, after his appearance serenading Arya Stark in the opening episode of Game of Thrones, series seven, was met with - well, let's call it - a wee bit of derision.

One unhappy Game of Thrones fan wrote: “That Ed Sheeran cameo on #GameOfThrones was remarkably awful. Could he have been roasted by a dragon at least?”

Time for a speedy exit on your broomstick, Ed.

    Next stop, Springfield.

Yes that's right - Ed is moonlighting in a "musically-themed" episode of The Simpsons this autumn.

"Me and Lisa have a whole thing going on," quipped Sheeran in his Instagram post (still available).

The singer - a longtime fan of the show - is reported to be playing Lisa Simpson's love interest and Milhouse's nemesis in Haw-Haw land, a parody of the Oscar favourite La-La Land.

The role was recorded over the phone, with executive producer Al Jean, describing it as "the perfect part", external for him.

    From orange to yellow.
