  2. Mercury Prize boss steps downpublished at 15:56 GMT 15 December 2016

Simon Frith is stepping down from his role as chair Mercury Prize's judging panel after 25 years.

He revealed the news in a lengthy essay, saying he handed in his notice after Skepta won the award on 15 September.

The article then delves deep into the history of the award, describing how it has changed over the years. Most notably, Frith says the prize was created to lure lapsed music fans back into record shops. Nowadays, though, it tries to persuade young people to check out new music on streaming services.

Although Frith gives no explicit reason for his decision to quit, he does mention that the Prize was taken over by the music industry's trade body, the BPI, in 2013, after it lost its sponsor.

"The starting principle of the prize was that it shouldn’t be run by the BPI," he says, explaining that the prize rewarded artistic merit rather than "marketing budgets".

However, he adds: "I can’t say, after serving two years under the new regime, that it has made any difference to the judging process or results, though the shift in power among the various institutions involved is clear (and I have no doubt that, as an event, the Prize will be marketed differently in the future)."

    Liam Gallagher

Have you thought about your New Year's resolutions yet? Don't worry, there's still plenty of time to make (and then break) them yet.

If industry rumours are to be believed then a number of massive players may have already vowed to return to the musical arena in 2017.

We can't be sure yet - but here's five definitely maybes.

  4. Madrid rockers The Parrots release new videopublished at 15:03 GMT 15 December 2016

    OK amigos - vamos!

There's something going on in Madrid. Something of a strictly garage rock flavour.

Last year saw lo-fi girl band Hinds become the first major Spanish act to play Glastonbury and now their good pals The Parrots are hot on their tails.

Check out the new video below for their incredibly catchy A Thousand Ways, off their debut album Los Ninos Sin Miedo.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this track was off the Nuggets collection and being beamed to you directly from the jukebox of some San Fran' bar in the late '60s. But don't be fooled. It's very much arriving via the internet, from the Spanish capital, in 2016...

    ...Y es muy bien.

  5. David Brent to appear in the Live Loungepublished at 14:43 GMT 15 December 2016

    BBC Radio 1

Did you enjoy Jamie T's efforts below? Good.

This year alone we've seen Usher, Christine and the Queens and Craig David, to name but a few, set Radio 1's Live Lounge on fire.

The 1975's cover of 1D was deemed the best of 2016 - but has the award been handed out prematurely? This afternoon's special guest is bound to stake a late claim for the title...

Who is he? We'll give you a clue. This man has played in toilets up and down the land with his long-suffering band Forgone Conclusion and even earned his stripes with a memorable impromptu acoustic set in his own office.

    Got it?

That's right, this afternoon David Brent will be heading in to Radio 1 to talk to Greg James and to make his Live Lounge debut, where he will perform his own rendition of a well-known hit - before hitting the road again for a gig in Bournemouth this evening.

Brent released his debut album Life on The Road this summer and you can check out his vocal talents below in the video for first single Gypsy Lady.

But what 'vibe' will he go for today? Another political reggae number perhaps? Or will it be foot down to the floor for a rock 'n' roll classic?

He's shown his credentials at covering other artists in the past, including Sting's Every Breath You Take and an, ahem, emotional rendition of If You Don't Know Me By Now, external?

Tune in to Greg James from 4pm to hear what goes down.

Oh and while you're waiting...go and get the guitar.

What is it with rappers and cartoons today?

While his erstwhile Wu Tang bandmate RZA is appearing in none other than the Simpsons (scroll down), Method Man has put his writing skills to good use working on a Christmas holiday special comic book for Marvel.

He has co-written Ghost Rider X-Mas Special Infinite, which is described as a “feel-good, positive” story.

Co-writer and illustrator Anthony Piper said: "This was my first writing assignment with Marvel and I definitely wanted to interject some humour into the story.

"The rapper Method Man came up with the story and I scripted the dialogue for it.

"Taking my writing style and combining it with some of the elements already in the story felt kind of tricky, but also fun."

Country-singing legend Dolly Parton has helped to raise $9m (£7.2m) for those affected by deadly wildfires in her native Tennessee, with a star-studded telethon.

Last month's blaze killed 14 people and burned over 2,500 structures and 17,000 acres of land not far from the singer's estate.

Dolly responded by establishing the My People Fund, vowing to donate $1,000 a month for six months to each of the families effected.

Now with a little help from her friends at the Smoky Mountains Rise event, including Cyndi Lauper, Don McLean (above) and Kenny Rogers, Dolly has helped to raise more funds for the victims.

  15. Patti Smith 'overwhelmed by nerves' at Nobel Prize ceremonypublished at 11:04 GMT 15 December 2016

    Patti SmithImage source, Getty Images

Punk poet Patti Smith has put her thoughts on the Nobel Prize night lyrics-gate fiasco down on paper in typically poetic style.

The singer stumbled over the lyrics to Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, during her tribute to the troubadour who won the Nobel Prize for literature.

Patti stopped singing during the performance at Stockholm's Concert Hall last week, asking the orchestra to begin again, saying "I apologize. I'm sorry, I'm so nervous."

Now in an essay to the New Yorker, Smith writes that she has known the track so well and for so long, "since I was a teen-ager", that it was the experience NOT the song that had got the better of her.

She said: "I hadn't forgotten the words that were now a part of me.

"I was simply unable to draw them out.

"I thought of my mother, who bought me my first Dylan album when I was barely sixteen.

"It occurred to me then that, although I did not live in the time of Arthur Rimbaud, I existed in the time of Bob Dylan.

    Quote Message

I also thought of my husband and remembered performing the song together, picturing his hands forming the chords.''

    Bob DylanImage source, Getty Images

Patti, who turns 70 before in two weeks, said that guests at the ceremony told her that the performance "seemed a metaphor for our own struggles" and that the experience made her "come to terms with the truer nature of my duty."

She added: "Why do we commit our work? Why do we perform?

"It is above all for the entertainment and transformation of the people. It is all for them.

    Quote Message

The song asked for nothing. The creator of the song asked for nothing. So why should I ask for anything?''

Now the high priestess of punk has spoken. And spoken well.

Let that be an end to the matter.
