    Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters

If you're reading this in Australia and on the look out for a new guitarist then you could do worse than ask 22-year-old Joey McClennan.

Joey was invited by Foos frontman Dave Grohl to join them onstage in Brisbane, after being spotted in the crowd holding a sign asking to play their track Monkey Wrench with the band.

“Come on kid, get on up here right now,” said Grohl, before politely inquiring; “Are you sure you can play it?”

    Joey did not disappoint.

He even got a cooling down courtesy of Dave and a bottle of water.

Dave jokingly swears when asking him to leave the stage so be warned but you can find some fan-shot footage online., external

BBC Biggest Weekend headliner Noel Gallagher may know how to pull in scores of music fans but he was given a lesson in how to fully strike a football by... well... his own two sons, live on the telly, at the weekend.

The rockstar's lads Sonny and Donovan both hit the target while their dad was left looking a bit silly on Sky footy programme Soccer AM

No pocket money for you this week - but bragging rights for sure.

Lil Uzi Vert has made a Shetland wool company "proud" after he wore a jumper with its name on.

The US rapper and Grammy nominee performed in a knitted sweater with Jamieson & Smith, Shetland on the front during a gig in Atlanta, Georgia last year.

"It was cool to see an American rapper wearing our company name," says Ella Gordon, who works for J&S.

"We've had people come into the shop, ask all about it and take photos of a similar jumper we have on display."

It's about time he made good and played a gig in the town hall in Lerwick we think...

Katy Perry has applauded Pink for hitting back at the Grammys president (scroll down) after he said women will simply have to "step up" next year.

Alessia Cara aside, female acts were largely ignored in the main honours stakes.

KP says she's proud of "ALL the women making incredible art", in spite of an "absurd lack of equality".

John Williams' famous score will be performed live on stage by the London Symphony Orchestra, who played on the original soundtrack in 1977.

  8. Newbie Tuesday #12: Jalen N'Gonda swapped Maryland for Merseysidepublished at 14:03 GMT 30 January 2018

    Kev Geoghegan
    Music News LIVE reporter

    Media caption,

Jalen N'Gonda performs I Need You in session for BBC Music Introducing.

"They still think I'm weird, they called me grandpa at school."

Twenty-three-year-old Jalen N'Gonda is something of an anachronism. Raised in Maryland, near Washington DC in the late 90s and surrounded by hip hop loving friends, he found himself picking up a guitar aged 13 and playing classic soul mixed with a bit of British invasion-era rock music.

"My music is soul, R&B, with a bit of rock, very traditional songwriting," explains the softly-spoken young singer.

With vocal shades of Smokey Robinson and Sam Cooke, the singer shares a similar retro space with musical contemporaries like Leon Bridges and Michael Kiwanuka.

Think of a modern edge on a classic sound.

"Soul was always my favourite growing up. Before I got into music at 11, I just knew songs that were out at the time, I liked Biggie and Tupac and I didn't go out out my way to listen to music but then I fell in love with music when I discovered rock and roll from the 50s and 60s which made me an outsider.

"I'd get made fun of, for listening to it. They still think I'm weird, they called me grandpa at school."

Perhaps is isn't strange then that Jalen, whose first performance was a local talent show aged 14, would eventually gravitate towards the Beatles own rock 'n' roll city to study at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.

"The decision to go to Liverpool was a joint decision between me and my dad. I wanted to go to New York City and it was tough to get into an American university but there was something about England and I've always liked the Beatles, really all the British invasion bands like the Animals and the Stones and the Zombies, so that's what pushed me.

    Quote Message

If it can't be New York, then I'll head across the pond to see how that goes.

    Media caption,

Jalen N'Gonda performs Don't You Remember in session for BBC Music Introducing.

Jalen admits it was something of a culture shock when he first arrived in the North-West, by way of Ireland.

"I landed in Dublin first and I was surrounded by Irish people and I'd never seen that many white people in one place in my life.

"I had dreadlocks as well so I probably shocked them too."

He may have traveled halfway around the world to study in the hometown of the Fab Four but it turns out that the world of academia was not for Jalen, who admits to regularly skipping classes to play gigs instead.

"I still did OK because the whole point was to get out there," he adds almost defensively. "But I spent more time in Liverpool than Lipa."

Jalen has had some support from BBC Music Introducing in Merseyside since uploading some music in 2016 and has found a champion in the shape of Jo Whiley but insists he is taking it all in his stride.

"I didn't intend to do all this solo stuff at first, I intended to play some jazz piano and do a little writing for other people."

    Media caption,

Jalen N'Gonda performs I Guess That Makes Me A Loser in session for BBC Music Introducing.

With all this talking of writing, can he remember his first ever song?

"I remember the early songs I wrote, around 15 or 16. The earliest one I remember writing was called Hey Lady Lifeguard.

"It was about the local lifeguard at our neighbourhood pool who was very fit, it was probably a terrible song."

  15. Pink and Lorde throw shade at #GrammysSoMalepublished at 11:14 GMT 30 January 2018

    PinkImage source, Getty Images

We hope you enjoyed our coverage of 'music's biggest night'; The Grammys on Sunday night.

Bruno Mars certainly will have, as he featured heavily having swept the board winning six awards, including best song, record and album.

Alessia Cara had a great night too, winning best new artist (scroll down for more from her) but many have been left wondering why the singer was the only female to walk away with a major award.

Especially on a night that saw many wear white roses in support of the Time's Up and Me Too campaigns, which fight against sexual abuse and harassment.

This led to the hashtag #GrammysSoMale trending online, in a similar vain to #OscarsSoWhite a few years back.

Recording Academy president Neil Portnow was asked about it by Variety magazine, external and he essentially suggested that the ladies need to (wo)man up.

“It has to begin with… women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level..." he said.

    Quote Message

[They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome. I don’t have personal experience of those kinds of brick walls that you face but I think it’s upon us - us as an industry - to make the welcome mat very obvious.

Pink however does not agree that women need to "step up".

In a hand-written note to the Academy she points out "women have been stepping up since the beginning of time".

Read her note in full above.

Meanwhile, Lorde appears to have taken a dig at the Grammys too.

The Kiwi star - pictured below with future US Presidential candidate (according to Kendrick Lamar) Jay Z - was the only artist listed in the album of the year category not to be invited to perform solo.

The singer apparently turned down the chance to play a part in a Tom Petty tribute medley instead and has sent a gentle reminder to the powers that be of her abilities to "murder a stage."

    Alessia CaraImage source, Getty Images

As we point out earlier, the 21-year-old singer - whose debut album was released in 2015 - was a controversial winner of the best new artist award.

While we're not ones to criticise her music, it is arguable 2017 was a bigger year for fellow nominees Khlaid and SZA.

That said, some of the criticism she has been getting prompted her to write an Instgram mesage to the haters out there.

"I will not let everything I’ve worked for be diminished by people taking offence to my accomplishments and feeling the need to tell me how much I suck.

"Here’s something fun! I’ve been thinking I suck since I was old enough to know what sucking meant. I’ve beat u to it. And that’s why this means a lot to me. despite my 183625 insecurities, I’ve been shown that what I’ve created is worth something."

The biggest of secrets is out.

BBC Music has today announced some of the massive names to perform at four locations across four UK nations for four radio stations on ONE Biggest Weekend at the end of May.

Radio 1 fans will be treated to Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift in Swansea, while Noel Gallagher heads up Radio 2's coverage in Perth and 6 Music boast Beck, Courtney Barnett and Manic Street Preachers for their big gig in Belfast.

Violinist Nigel Kennedy will be sent to Coventry to perform for Radio 3.

Ed Sheeran said: “So excited to be part of The Biggest Weekend this summer! I’ve always loved performing at Big Weekend with Radio 1 and this year it’s going to be even bigger. Bring it on Swansea!”

Manic Street Preachers added: “The Biggest Weekend is in Belfast, which is good in itself. We’ve played there a lot over the years, we did one of the greatest gigs ever there back in The Limelight in 1990. And then we’ve had subsequently just lots of great gigs there, just amazing ones. It is good to spread 6 Music’s message far and wide.”
