It may be hard to imagine now but once upon a time, artists like Queen, The Who, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin had to audition to be played on the BBC.

Some like Led Zep passed with flying colours, but others did not, as BBC Culture discovered.

T Rex were described as "crap... and pretentious crap at that", Queen referred to as a "lightish progressive band" and Bowie (above) as an "Amateur sounding vocalist who sings wrong notes and out of tune.”

Wonder what they all ended up doing?

German police have recovered more than 100 items stolen from paperback writer John Lennon's estate, including three diaries.

The diaries were put on display at Berlin police headquarters with other items including a tape recording of a Beatles concert, two pairs of glasses, sheet music and a cigarette case.

Police said a 58-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

    Clearly a jealous guy.

The items were stolen in New York in 2006 from Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, who identified the objects from photos she was shown at the German consulate in New York, German media reported.

Detectives said much of the haul was confiscated from an auction house in Berlin in July, sparking an investigation to find the rest of the stolen items.

South London grime superstar Stormzy has posted a full and frank apology for sending admittedly "homophobic" messages on social media.

The tweets, which were sent between 2011 and 2014 and have since been deleted, re-surfaced online this week.

Today, the 24-year-old has said sorry for the "unacceptable and disgusting" messages sent by his younger self out of "ignorance", which has now been "unlearned".

Very hurtful and discriminative views that I’ve unlearned as I’ve grown up and become a man.

    The Hollywood Reporter

The legal action is over continued use of the band's name.

In papers filed by Fagen, he says an agreement signed by the band in 1972 says that in the event of any members' death or his quitting the band, his share goes to the remaining members.

But around seven years ago, Donald and Walter - who died in September - were the only signatories.

Now Walter's widow has apparently demanded 50 percent ownership of Steely Dan.

Fagen also says the Becker estate currently operates the band's website and refuses to relinquish or share control of it.

He's asked for upward of $1m in damages and is asking the court to rule the original contract is valid and declare him the sole owner of the Steely Dan name and all musical rights associated with it.

    Roger Waters

Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters has ripped into Nick Cave over his "arrogant unconcern" and "implacable indifference" towards UK Artists for Palestine's cultural boycott of Israel.

Nick and his band the Bad Seeds ignored pleas from the likes of Roger, Brian Eno and filmmaker Ken Loach in performing two gigs in the Israeli capital on Sunday and Monday night.

In a pre-gig press conference, Cave said his decision to go ahead with the concerts was about "making a principled stand".

Now, artists including Waters and Eno have hit back.

The Floyd bassist opened his response with; "I read Nick Cave’s press conference statements with a mixture of sorrow, rage and disbelief.

"Nick thinks this is about censorship of his music?

    Quote Message

Nick, with all due respect, your music is irrelevant to this issue, so is mine, so is Brian Eno’s, so is Beethoven’s, this isn’t about music, it’s about human rights,”

Eno asserted his belief that while Cave "has every right to come to his own conclusions...this has nothing to do with ‘silencing’ artists'."

Adding that he finds the singer's charges "rather grating when used in a context where a few million people are permanently and grotesquely silenced."

Director Loach, who directed films like I, Daniel Blake, Kes and Looking For Eric, said the situation is quite clear.

“Nick Cave has a choice, either to stand with the oppressed Palestinians or the Israeli state which denies them their human rights. He chooses to stand with the oppressor.”
