  2. Festival gender and race imbalance laid barepublished at 15:56 BST 19 June 2017

Arcade Fire are one of the few festival headliners with female members

Six out of every seven festival headliners were all-male in the UK over the last 10 years, new research shows.

Out of 321 headliners at 10 major festivals surveyed by the Press Association (PA), just 47 (15%) had at least one female member.

And only 89 (28%) featured at least one black, Asian or minority ethnic performer.

Green Man has been the best for gender equality - but the worst for ethnic diversity. Metal festival Download's headliners have been 100% male.

PA found that 80% of Glastonbury's headliners over the past decade have been men, and 70% have been white.

PJ Harvey (at Green Man) and Pink (at V) are the only solo female headliners this year, while Arcade Fire (Isle Of Wight) and The xx (Bestival) are the only acts with female members.

  3. Man! I feel like some new Haimpublished at 15:41 BST 19 June 2017

Over the weekend, harmony-loving sisters Haim played a tiny show in Los Angeles to just 100 fans. They chose to mark the occasion by playing a cover of – wait, is this right? - Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like a Woman.

It looks like a lot of fun.

If you want to hear some actual new Haim, you don’t have to wait long. Tonight, Annie Mac is debuting new single Little Of Your Love on her BBC Radio 1 show.

What does it sound like? We have no idea, but from the below picture, we’re guessing you should wear red while listening.

    David Rodigan

Legendary reggae DJ David Rodigan is no stranger to playing huge events - he's taking his record crate to some of Europe's top music festivals this summer.

But the latest date in his schedule is more unusual - a cricket match.

It's just been announced that the DJ will get the crowds into the reggae spirit when England play the West Indies during a One Day International at the Kia Oval in London on 27 September.

More information is on the venue's website, external.

  6. Celebrating Dame Shirley Basseypublished at 14:41 BST 19 June 2017

    Dame Shirley Bassey at Glastonbury

Fifty years after her signature hit Big Spender was released, Welsh pop legend Dame Shirley Bassey is to be honoured at a star-studded award ceremony next week.

The 80-year-old star will get the Silver Clef Award at the event, which will raise funds for music therapy charity Nordoff-Robbins. She said:

    Quote Message

Music has been there to celebrate the highs and sooth through the lows. I believe everybody has a song inside of them. Some people can lose their way in life, some struggle to express themselves, but Nordoff-Robbins works with these people to find their inner songbird and true happiness.

Not only is it the 50th anniversary of Big Spender - it's also somehow 10 years since she gave Glastonbury one of its all-time great performances, wearing her personalised wellies.

Meanwile, Blondie, Phil Collins, Emeli Sande and Alexander Armstrong will be among the others rewarded at the O2 Silver Clef Awards on 30 June.

  7. Geri Halliwell releases emotional tribute to George Michaelpublished at 14:16 BST 19 June 2017

Geri and George back in 2000Image source, PA

It's long been known that Geri was a close friend of George Michael, who sadly passed away last year. So it’s no surprise the ex-Spice Girl’s new single, a tribute to him, is so personal and emotional.

“Who knows why the good die young,” she sings in Angels in Chains, which appeared today on Spotify, external. The song features cheeky references to George’s hits Freedom and Faith, with backing vocals provided by members of his old band too.

All profits from the single will go to charity Childline.

Geri’s going to be on Chris Evans’ BBC Radio 2 breakfast show tomorrow to reveal all about it and her past with George, but she’s already been speaking to a few other people. Watch her talking about the song below.

  8. LCD Soundsystem reveal new album detailspublished at 13:58 BST 19 June 2017

    NME

    LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy

Dance-rock superstars LCD Soundsystem have revealed the tracklist for their new album, American Dream – their first since splitting in 2011.

It includes a song called Emotional Haircut, which suggests the band’s frontman James Murphy finds going to the barbers just as traumatic as most men. Another song is called How Do You Sleep? which may be addressed to his barber, but, we admit, is more likely to be a political number.

The band have also announced a world tour, and you can see all the tour dates as well as the full tracklist over at NME, external.

LCD Soundsystem premiered two of the album’s tracks last month, including the riotous Call the Police, which we've put below for no other reason than it's a great listen.

  9. Tupac biopic mauled by criticspublished at 13:28 BST 19 June 2017

    Tupac ShakurImage source, Getty Images

The Tupac Shakur biopic came out in the US on Friday - which would have been the rapper's 46th birthday.

Demetrius Shipp Jr plays Tupac in All Eyez On Me, which promises to tell "the untold story" of "the man behind the legend".

But it's reached the screens after a few problems finding a director, and pretty poor reviews. It is, in fact, "one of the most useless music biopics ever made", according to Nick Allen on RogerEbert.com, external. Which is saying something.

The Hollywood Reporter, external said it was "as clean and polished and blandly over-lit as a TV soap opera", while Variety, external declared it was "not, in the end, a very good movie".

But as ever, the fans took no notice of critics. It earned $27.1m (£21.2m) at North American box offices at the weekend - which, by all accounts, was better than expected.

  10. Mel C reveals mental health strugglespublished at 13:06 BST 19 June 2017

    The Daily Telegraph

    Mel CImage source, AFP/Getty Images

Melanie C, formerly known as Sporty Spice, has become the latest star to talk frankly about the mental and physical difficulties of fame.

In a revealing interview with The Daily Telegraph’s mental health podcast, she says she loved her time in the Spice Girls but struggled with feelings that she didn’t deserve her success, especially as people called her the "plain one at the back that didn't really do anything".

    Quote Message

That all ended up in me not eating properly and exercising obsessively, because I thought I had to be a certain way to be deserving of everything that was happening to me... To be a pop star I had to be perfect, and that was my way of trying to achieve perfection.

She added: "I'd never starved myself, but I wasn't eating properly and I was exercising obsessively and all of my time with the Spice Girls I think I was probably living on adrenaline.

"God only knows how I got through it, and I think my body just got to the point where it was like, 'Enough!'"

Mel eventually got help after visiting her doctor. Anyone experiencing mental health issues should do the same, or seek help from friends and family, she says.

You can read more and listen to the whole podcast here, external.

  12. The Proclaimers were banned in America?!?published at 12:17 BST 19 June 2017

The Proclaimers singing I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) on Top of the Pops

The Proclaimers’ mega-hit I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) is one of the greatest singalongs ever written. It’s also one of the greatest love songs ever written. So who on earth would ban it?

In a new BBC Scotland documentary about the band, brothers Charlie and Craig Reid reveal that several US radio stations banned 500 Miles when it was released in 1988.

The reason? A line where they sing “I’m gonna be the man who’s havering to you." To haver, as every Scot knows, means to talk rubbish. But the radio stations apparently thought it meant to do… well, y’know, something very naughty!

Charlie says 500 Miles is the only reason the band are still able to record new music. “In terms of what it has brought in over the years it pays for new records, it pays for tours, it underpins everything we do."

    Quote Message

I don't know what it is. It is indestructible that record. We wouldn't get out alive if we played a gig without it.

Learn more about the band's amazing story here. And look out for them at this year's Glastonbury. The singalong for I'm Gonna Be will be immense.

  13. Morrissey has a rant, part 423published at 11:47 BST 19 June 2017

    MorrisseyImage source, PA

Morrissey has had a pop at record shop HMV for attempting to "freeze sales" of a reissue of The Smiths' single The Queen Is Dead.

The vinyl versions bear stickers saying "Limited to one per customer".

That prompted the vociferous vocalist to advise fans to try and buy more by going shopping in disguise. Fans should head to the shop with "seven variable wigs, a box containing false noses, multiple-sized plastic clip-on ears, a nurse outfit, a set of stilts, a Superman cape, and a variety of oddly shaped spectacles".

    He opined on Facebook, external:

    Quote Message

An attempt to freeze sales is, of course, an overwhelming insult to the Smiths... as if artistic freedom must struggle in our current culture of banality... as if only counterfeit emotions may apply.

Or, as HMV pointed out, the stickers may just have been applied because there was "very limited" stock.

Pixie Lott arrives to record Grenfell Tower charity singleImage source, PA

Lots of British musicians are going into the studio to record a charity single for the victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Stars including Stormzy, Emile Sande and Pixie Lott have already recorded their parts for the release, a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Who's going in today? Names are yet to be released but many are hoping, external the list will include members of One Direction.

Over the weekend, more musicians have been commenting on the horrific fire. On Sunday, Blur frontman Damon Albarn spoke to BBC Radio 4, giving his own, touchingly personal, take on the event.

    Quote Message

I’ve been cycling past Grenfell most of my adult life. It’s the kind of place that brought me to west London in the first place… a place where there’s a real community.

He says the fire "surely has to be a turning point" in British life and politics. Listen to him below.

  18. Radiohead to bring the mud to Glastonbury again?published at 09:38 BST 19 June 2017

    Thom YorkeImage source, EPA

It's - finally! - Glastonbury this week. Which can mean only one thing: time to compulsively check weather forecasts.

This year is the 20th anniversary of Glasto’s infamous ‘Year of Mud’, when it was so wet one of the stages appeared to sink into the ground. Who headlined that year? Indie titans Radiohead. And who’s headlining this year? Er, indie titans Radiohead. Uh-oh!

So does that mean everyone going should start packing wellies and umbrellas? Probably. According to the BBC Weather forecast, it's going to cool off and there's currently a raindrop on Friday, pretty much at the time Radiohead are due to play.

But otherwise, the weekend is looking dry and cloudy. But it could all change. So if you do take a wetsuit, make sure to take some sun cream too.
