I wrote this album in a house on a quiet terraced street in East London. The lyrics are inspired by the lives of the friends I made whilst living there. I recorded most the songs in the living room of the house and if I listen back closely, I can still hear the sound of the old man’s television shows coming through the walls from next door, the kids from the house opposite playing football in the street below and the sound of my girlfriend’s footsteps on the wooden floorboards above...I hope you enjoy listening to the album as much as I did making it.

Tom kicks off a headline tour of the UK and Europe in Glasgow on 12 October.

OK, it's a short working week this week so all the normal rules are going out of the window.

We usually wait until Friday to hit you with a load of new music videos but here's an indie triple to help ease you back in.

First up, Imagine Dragons have dropped a cinematic new video for their track, Natural, taken from their third album, Evolve.

It's like a dark Scandinavian mini drama and you can check it out above.

Next up Scots rockers Fatherson have shared a new video for Charm School, taken from their forthcoming album Sum Of All Your Parts - out on 14 September.

The band, apparently in unison, described it as an: “An observation on having to mind your p’s and q’s all the time - and the need to jump through hoops for other people.

"A charm school is an elocution school where people are taught manners above all else - which might be a little unrealistic for real life”.

Well manners cost nothing, after all, do they? So it should be quite affordable to attend.

Last but not least Irish band Kodaline have released a mini film of their own to go with their track Head Held High.

Charm school aside there's another early lesson in this one for a little girl who has a bit too much to say for herself to the downtrodden dinner lady, who is dreaming of hanging up her apron in order to be in her own musical.

The track will feature on their upcoming LP, Politics Of Living, which arrives on 28 September.

We wonder what Johnny Borrell made of Pete Doherty's big breakfast win?

He was briefly in an early incarnation of The Libertines, did you know?

Now he's back with his band Razorlight, following a solo foray into world music.

Olympus Sleeping will feature on their forthcoming new album - their first in ten years - which is out on 26 October and you can check out the new video above.

The band have also released performance videos of another three new tunes: Japanrock, Sorry? and Got To Let The Good Times Back Into Your Life.

Speaking before his band's appearance at the recent Y Not? Festival, Johnny told us how he'd "lost the passion for rock 'n' roll" during the intervening years but was now "excited to plug an electric guitar in" again.

He said: "To play Golden Touch 15 years later and have people knowing the words is amazing. It's a real honour and privilege if people carry your song in their heart and conscience.

Razorlight will tour these shores in December.

  5. The record deal Taylor Swift signed when she was 15 is expiringpublished at 14:59 BST 28 August 2018

    Variety

    Taylor SwiftImage source, Getty Images

Taylor signed a record deal with indie label Big Machine back in 2005 which finally expires in November - a mere 13 years later.

It's unclear what Swift's next move will be - whether she'll decide to stay put, go independent or negotiate a deal with new representation - but Variety, external have spent some time thinking through all the different scenarios.

    Quote Message

She could hardly be in a better position to attract suitors: Swift still sells albums in a post-CD age (prior to the triple platinum Reputation, her first five albums were all RIAA-certified for selling between 6 to 10 million copies, a starting streak no other artist can claim). She’s heartily embraced paid streaming, after a standoff in which she was the face of the resistance to free. And Pollstar reports 100 percent of tickets sold in the first 18 cities on her 2018 stadium tour.

Last week we brought you the significant news that Libertines frontman Pete Doherty is set to have his name inscribed on a wall of fame in a Margate cafe after scoffing a "mega breakfast" to claim it for free.

He put away the feast which included four bacon rashers, four eggs, four sausages, a burger and chips, plus plenty of trimmings, inside 20 minutes to beat the challenge set by cafe owner Mark Ezekiel.

Now, a mural has appeared in Southend-On-Sea depicting the epic breakfast challenge (see above).

Safe to say, it's a moment in history that should never be forgotten - and now, it won't be.

Thousands of fans are expected to come to pay their respects to soul legend Aretha Franklin, who died nearly two weeks ago.

Aretha's body will lie in state for two days at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History, an African American museum in her home town of Detroit, before her funeral takes place there on Friday.

The museum also hosted civil rights activist Rosa Parks's viewing in 2005.

Detroit, seen as the home of soul and Motown music, is treating Franklin's death as the passing of royalty and a week of mourning is being held in the city.

The 76-year-old's body will be on public view on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Friday's funeral at the Greater Grace Temple is for family and friends only, but Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson and Stevie Wonder are among those due to sing there.

Former US President Bill Clinton will be among the speakers.

“I’ve been renovating my flat, it’s a flat on my own, which is great because I can be naked and paint and not worry about being sweaty,” says Devonshire singer-songwriter Fenne Lily.

There is come context here. It is backstage at the blisteringly hot Wilderness festival in Oxfordshire where Fenne has just played on the main stage.

“You can wash it off,” she continues where she left off.

“You can’t wash paint off clothes but you can wash it off your body, also skin is waterproof, I think naked is the best way to do anything.

“Apart from maybe playing a gig.”

Fortunately for the early-afternoon Wilderness audience, Fenne kept any naturist urges under wraps as she performed songs from her self-released debut album, On Hold.

“It’s quite an embarrassingly long walk,” she says about her first time on a major stage.

“Because they’re like, ‘Fenne Lily’ and I have to come scuttling on and get my pick and tune my guitar and faff around on this huge stage.

“Also, I have nothing to do on stage but sing, I was like, ‘I could do a cartwheel but I won’t’, it felt like I was wasting the space.

“But it’s a wicked view and you can see the whole site, I spotted some pizza that I wanted to eat.”

Still just 20-years-old, Fenne picked up a guitar and began writing songs of heartbreak as a way of taking her focus away from school.

But she finds it hard to pinpoint the moment she decided to become a musician.

    Quote Message

I was very academic, very competitive and I got very stressed out about everything and I used to play guitar just to calm down, not to be better than anyone else but purely for myself and I think it was nice to learn like that, just to make something that I’m proud of that won’t get graded.

    Quote Message

There shouldn’t be any sense of competition and I know that there is but it shouldn’t be like that, I never had lessons but I probably should.

If it’s in academia that Fenne’s competitive streak rears its head, then how does it affect her songwriting? Doe she set a high benchmark for herself when it comes to lyrics?

“I try not to force anything, like there are periods where I don’t write anything. Six months is my longest just not writing a note and then I’ll have a week where I write five songs.

“The only aim I have is that they always stay genuinely relevant to what I’m going through at that moment. I don’t enjoy going back to a song after five months and trying to dredge those feelings up.”

Last year, Fenne played a session for BBC Music Introducing in the West and two years ago, landed a slot on the Introducing stage at T in the Park in Scotland.

Until now, she has played those gigs, largely, as a solo artist but now relishes the chance of having a band with her.

“I’ve written my next record and with the first one, I didn’t have the band to play things through with so it was very much me coming up with the parts and then allocating them to musicians and it was kind of a bitty process but now I’ve worked on them and I’m playing them through with the band.”

While she remains unsigned, it seems there are perks to being on the radar of indie labels.

“A label recently gave me all of their roster on vinyl. It’s the good thing about not being signed; it’s like, ‘Do you want to sign?’ I’m like, ‘Maybe, do you have any records?’"

Whilst she counts herself as a fan of artists like Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, she says the key to creativity is to generally avoid artists who play similar music to her own.

“I don’t listen to a lot of singer songwriter stuff, I think when people see a girl and a guitar they instantly are like, ‘You sound a lot like Laura Marling,’ and I absolutely don’t at all.”

    Media caption,

Fenne Lilly Performs at the Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire

Fenne is supporting US singer Lucy Dacus on her UK and European dates later in the year and she’s hoping that we will get a chance to hear the new album fairly soon too, though she admits it nearly didn’t happen.

“I went to Berlin for three weeks and wrote a lot of stuff and then my phone died and I lost it all, so I started from scratch again and I didn’t back it up on the cloud because I’m too stingy.

    Quote Message

I’ve been reading a lot of philosophy books, I’m seeing it as kind of like a forced cleanse, the bits that I can remember are probably the bit that should be remembered and that will probably be remembered by other people so its fine.

Fenne may have just imparted the greatest piece of music-based philosophy there and perhaps all bands should record some songs and then purposefully delete them.

“Often I’ll write a song and then play it to someone and they’ll say, ‘I like that bit’ and then because they said they like it, it’s the only bit I remember the next time I try playing it.

“I was so bummed though, I wasn’t as relaxed about it when I happened, I cried on my way back from the store.

"I keep a notebook because I don’t really trust computers, I‘ve got the lyrics which is the important bit.”

  11. X Factor's Louis Tomlinson says he feels 'duty of care' to contestantspublished at 12:54 BST 28 August 2018

    Louis TomlinsonImage source, Getty Images

If anyone will get what this year's X Factor contestants are going through, it's Louis Tomlinson.

We all know the new X Factor judge found fame himself taking part on the show, way back in 2010, as a member of boy band One Direction (whatever happened to them?)

Speaking ahead of this year's series kicking off, Louis has said he feels he has a "duty of care" to the contestants.

"It was surreal for me as the contestants auditioning," he said.

"I think it also helps having me there, I don't think they have ever had anyone on the panel who has auditioned for the show.

"I feel a duty of care, I want to help people out."

Louis Tomlinson and Simon CowellImage source, Getty Images

Louis added that "it wasn't that hard" for fellow judge Simon Cowell to persuade him to join the panel, admitting that he had long been a fan of the show before he was on it himself

"I think it was maybe two or three years ago that I started coming down to the show of my own accord and helped Simon with his acts on routining days in the studio.

"I found that really exciting. So as soon as I realised I could do both my own music and judge at the same time, it was a bit of a no brainer for me."

Tomlinson said he is "relishing" the pressure of mentoring acts in a public arena, and that he is keen on "trying to use my experience" to help new artists.

Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda complete the judging panel for the new ITV series, which kicks off this weekend.

We're sure you all had a memorable weekend, all you rockers and ravers down at Reading + Leeds.

But surely none more so than Hannah and Katie, who got engaged on stage during Wolf Alice's set at the southern leg of the bank holiday double header.

Singer Ellie Rowsell brought the couple up on stage ahead of their love song, Don't Delete the Kisses.

"I want to invite two lovebirds on stage", said Ellie, before the romantic scene unfolded - thankfully with a happy ending.

"She said yessssssss!" exclaimed Ellie before dedicating the track to the newly-engaged duo.

Watch above and try to hold back the tears of unbridled joy.

Elsewhere Mike Shinoda honoured his late Linkin Park bandmate Chester Bennington by stepping up as a solo artist.

Bennington died aged 41 in July, having taken his own life, an LA coroner said.

Shinoda thanked fans for helping him get over his own anxiety about performing the band's songs again and urged fans not to feel "ashamed" of their own personal struggles.

"Hopefully by coming to these shows and enjoying the music and by engaging in this type of thing it makes the bad feeling just go away" he said, before launching into a rendition of fans' favourite, In the End.

"I want you guys to sing it so loud that Chester can hear you... are you ready to do that?"

    Watch above.

Shinoda also joined Blink-182 for a rendition of another Linkin Park track, Faint.

In a statement Mel said that her divorce and the death of her father were the main reasons she was seeking treatment.

"Sometimes it is too hard to cope with all the emotions I feel. But the problem has never been about sex or alcohol - it is underneath all that," she said.

"No-one knows myself better than I do. But I am dealing with it. I love my three girls more than life itself."

The Leeds-born star said she was recently diagnosed with PTSD and was speaking about it because it's a "huge issue" for lots of people.

    Quote Message

If I can shine a light on the issue of pain, PTSD and the things men and women do to mask it, I will do.

A recent video the star posted on Instagram showed her reading a book called Heal Your PTSD.

Despite currently working as a judge on America's Got Talent alongside Simon Cowell and plotting a Spice Girls reunion of some form or other, Mel says she plans to enter a UK-based treatment centre.

  16. Weird Al Yankovic gets star on Hollywood Walk of Famepublished at 10:29 BST 28 August 2018

Comedian Weird Al YankovicImage source, Getty Images

Comedian Weird Al Yankovic, who's best known for his hilarious song parodies, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday.

“I kind of feel like this is maybe my one real shot at immortality because I know that now my name is gonna basically be here until the end of civilization, which, let’s face it, is probably like three or four months away.”

In July, US President Donald Trump's Hollywood star was vandalised with a pickaxe - and Yankovic was quick to joke about the incident during his own speech.

"Please don't pickaxe my star. I know it's all the rage these days, but that's not cool. Unless at some point in the future, I do something unfathomably monstrous and evil in which case, sure, fine, OK, go ahead.

"Limit yourself to spitting and urinating. Have some class, people."

  18. Lauryn Hill: 'These are my songs'published at 09:46 BST 28 August 2018

Singer responds to accusations of stealing music

    Lauryn HillImage source, Getty Images

This weekend just gone marked 20 years since the release of the US star's seminal hip hop album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

She's now responded to claims that she “stole” the music for the record, as well as accusations that she mistreated her touring band.

In a lengthy online statement, the rapper/actress - who says she last gave an interview "over a decade ago" - wrote: “I may have been inclusive, but these are my songs."

“The Miseducation was the first time I worked with musicians outside of the Fugees [whose] report and working relationship was clear. In an effort to create the same level of comfort, I may not have established the necessary boundaries and may have been more inviting than I should have been,” Hill wrote.

    Quote Message

In hindsight, I would have handled it differently for the removal of any confusion. And I have handled it differently since, I’m clear and I make clear before someone walks in the door what I am and am not looking for. I may have been inclusive, but these are my songs.

The claims were made by jazz musician Robert Glasper, who was briefly a member of Hill’s band in 2008, earlier this month in an interview with a Houston radio station, external

The collective of musicians who worked on the album later sued Hill over songwriting credits. The case was settled in 2001.

Glasper went on to accuse Hill of treating her touring band harshly.

He said: “Every day she comes in and changes the show, changes what she wants to do.

“The last rehearsal, she doesn’t show up. Her manager comes in and says, 'Lauryn’s not really feeling the way you guys have been learning the music, so we’re gonna cut your pay in half.'"

Hill, has now responded, writing: "Don’t have the details or recollection of cutting the band’s pay in half.

"If fees had been negotiated and confirmed without my knowledge, I may have asked for them to be adjusted. But I would never just cut a musician’s pay arbitrarily unless I had a legitimate reason. There are artists who do cut pay though, James Brown was notorious for docking musicians if they did something he didn’t like, I’m sure there are others.”
