While those soulful melodies wash over you, scroll down to see how Mariah Carey had a much better NYE this time around, why Lorde has been labelled "a bigot" and find out what the first book is for members of the new David Bowie book club.

Plus Britney ends her Vegas stint, Sir Macca hails Sir Ringo and we tell you all about our first Newbie Tuesday of the new year; Isaac Gracie - one to watch for 2018.

We're both off to the gym to work off all those mince pies (honest).

Film director and Bowie's son Duncan Jones has launched an online book club inviting fans to read some of his father's favourite pieces of literature.

"My dad was a beast of a reader," he wrote on social media.

"I've been feeling a building sense of duty to go on the same literary marathon in tribute to dad."

First up for the new 'Bowie Book Club' is Peter Ackroyd’s Hawksmoor, which he describes as "an amuse cerveau before we get into the heavy stuff."

  7. Newbie Tuesday #8: Isaac Gracie - the slightly anxious star in the makingpublished at 13:58 GMT 2 January 2018

    Kev Geoghegan
    Music News LIVE reporter

    Isaac GracieImage source, Aurelie Lagouette

Pitched somewhere between Jeff Buckley, Ed Sheeran and James Bay, singer-songwriter Isaac Gracie has been careful not to let the hype get to his youthful 23-year-old head.

"Whilst those things are really nice to hear and when I'm feeling comfortable some day, maybe I'll take it all in and it'll make me smile," he told us at the Wilderness festival back in August.

"But in reality there's a load of anxiety and pressure just being at this position because the prospects are theoretically so high and the potential is there and my ambition is there, so living up to that is like fear."

Isaac first uploaded some songs to BBC Music Introducing in Norfolk in 2015, which led to a session at the BBC's Maida Vale studios in February 2016 and on to South-by-Southwest in Austin Texas.

He capped off an amazing summer with a slot on the Introducing stage at Glastonbury (below).

    Media caption,

Performing live on the BBC Introducing Stage on Saturday

With such a live pedigree at an early age and for someone who comes across as a confident performer, it's a little surprisingly that he still feels the effect of anxiety while performing at festivals.

"Being in large places gives me some anxiety, it can be stressful. But in places like this, there are some festivals where the vibe is a lot more chilled and spacious and comforting."

Words like 'fear'' and 'anxiety' which appear often in the young singer's answers, give hints at just how much he has personally invested in his music.

Despite those fears, he told BBC Music News LIVE that playing to people unfamiliar with his work - which has been championed by the likes of Annie Mac, Jo Whiley and Huw Stephens - still gives him a great thrill.

"Before people know your music, no-one knows your music so you always come from a position of trying to convince them why they should care.

"Shows where I've played where people do know the music rival each other in terms of enjoyment because having a crowd of people who don't know you and watching them learn to take part, that's a feeling that you can't replicate.

"I try and enjoy these times as much as I can because the future will be what it will be but I'd be a fool not to make the most of these moments, it's quite special."

Isaac is out on tour at the end of this month and it sounds we can expect his debut album soon.

It's been produced by the famed Markus Dravs ("a prolific G, a mentor" says Isaac) - who has won Grammy album of the year awards with Arcade Fire and Mumford Sons.

"The album was living in limbo because it took a while and was such an exhaustive process to make something really good and I think we achieved that. When you invest so heavily mentally and emotionally in something, it's really difficult to finish that process and find out what you've made.

"I got the final copy and had a listen to it and thought, 'oh I'm really happy with this',

"For the first time, I could see where I was going musically because the path was laid out by the music.

"When you're doing these things you have to feel really confident about what it is that you're doing it for and having that confidence and reassurance helps, so the album's on its way and I'm quite excited by that."

Just imagine, when Britney began her residency Barack Obama was still the US president, Kanye West had yet to headline Glastonbury and no-one had even heard of the word 'brexit'.

The Irish Times provided one of the more memorable - albeit pretty harsh - album reviews of 2017, when they gave Noel Gallagher's Who Built The Moon a meagre one star.

    Its reviewer wrote:

    Quote Message

We're talking about a middle-aged Manchester City fan whose last memorable contribution to his art appeared more than two decades ago.

Ouch. We wonder what he got the one star for?

Lorde has been called "a bigot" by an American Rabbi after the Kiwi pop star cancelled a gig in Israel.

Shmuley Boteach took out an advert in the Washington Post accusing the singer’s native New Zealand of prejudice against Israel.

The ad criticizes the 21-year-old for joining “a global antisemitic boycott of Israel”.

It features a large photo of the singer superimposed over a picture of men running through rubble cradling babies.

The article carries the pull-out quote; "21 is young to become a bigot."

Poet Tony Walsh has gifted all future rights and royalties of his inspiring work This is the Place, which gained global praise following last year's terror attack, to the people of Manchester.

The charity Forever Manchester, which supports grassroots community activity across Greater Manchester, will benefit from the donation.

His poem caught the world's attention when he performed it on the steps of Manchester Town Hall at a vigil the day after the Manchester Arena attack which killed 22 people.

The poem has already raised more than £150,000 for three charities.

Nick Massey from Forever Manchester said: “Back in 2013 we asked Tony Walsh to bring our cause to life, to give it a voice and a personality to our local communities. What we got back was the amazing poem ‘This is the Place’.

    Quote Message

But it was never intended to mark a moment in time, it’s a poem that should always remind us just how important our local communities are, in bad times, sure… but perhaps more importantly, in good times too.

    Morning people!

Happy New Year one and all and welcome back to the first 2018 edition of Music News LIVE.

Our NY's resolution is to provide you all with the best possible daily rolling music news service and we'll start today with Jay-Z confessing his sins to wife Beyonce in a new video, Lorde is attacked for cancelling a show in Israel and plenty of reaction to a Beatle and a Bee Gee becoming knights of the realm.

While we get up and running, why not have one last look back at the 52 things we learned last year (seems so long ago now).

And have a watch of Ed Sheeran, above, performing his Christmas number one track Perfect alongside Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at their 25th annual end of the year Hootenanny, where Beth Ditto also did her best Candi Staton impression.
