    Radio 1 DJ Charlie Sloth dedicated a section of his show last night to make sure that listeners were all agreed on the direction that football is currently travelling in.

  4. Nine Chilean ex-soldiers sentenced for killing folk singerpublished at 15:18 BST 4 July 2018

    A judge in Chile has found eight retired soldiers guilty of the 1973 murder of popular folk singer Victor Jara.

    A ninth suspect was sentenced for his role as an accessory to Jara's murder.

    Victor Jara was arrested the day after the military coup led by Gen Augusto Pinochet and taken to a sports stadium in Santiago, where he was tortured in front of other prisoners.

    His body was found days later, riddled with bullets.

    The 40-year-old singer became famous in the 1960s and 70s for his protest and pacifist songs such as The Right to Live in Peace.

    The new Whitney Houston docu-film, Whitney, hits the big screens on Friday.

    Six weeks ago, the BBC reported claims in the film that the singer was sexually abused.

    Now, speaking to the NME, director Kevin Macdonald has said Whitney's relationships with Bobby Brown and her best friend and assistant Robyn Crawford were not exactly as previously documented.

    "He [Bobby] wasn’t the person he was painted to be and Whitney wasn’t the innocent princess she was painted to be.

    "The tabloid perception was wrong, about lots of things. Like the relationship with Robyn.

    The singer posted a picture of herself as a young child with her late dad Joe Jackson, who died last week.

    There is no message other than a purple heart emoji.

    Jackson Sr was laid to rest in the same cemetery as his son, Michael, external, according to reports earlier this week.

    The young singer and former X Factor contestant is number four on the American Top Songs chart on YouTube with her track Boo'd Up and number seven on the Billboard charts.

    "If you would have told me five years ago this was how my journey was going to go, I would have told someone they're definitely lying," Ella Mai told Newsbeat.

    The track is proving so popular that it's been given the remix treatment on a new version featuring Nicki Minaj and Quavo.

    The 23-year-old caught the attention of producer DJ Mustard, who has worked with the likes of Cardi B and Big Sean, when her cover of Tupac's Keep Your Head Up ended up on his Instagram Explore feed.

    After being noticed by Mustard, she went back and forth from New York to LA to go to studio sessions and eventually signed to his label.

    "There's a lot of young females doing R&B in England who are extremely talented and deserve more light on their stories.

    "I'm proud to be from England and doing so well in America so I can fly the flag."

    Michael Jackson's daughter has been granted a restraining order against an alleged stalker.

    Nicholas Lewis Stevens apparently arrived at a recording studio where she was working in June, it's claimed in court documents filed in the US.

    It's alleged he told Paris he had visited the studio several times.

    A judge granted a temporary restraining order against Mr Stevens until another hearing takes place on 24 July.

    Actress Paris is making her own move into the music industry and formed a band The Soundflowers with musician Gabriel Glenn.

    The Luther actor is no stranger to the music world, having released his own EP, Big Man, in 2006, as well as having an Ibiza DJ residency.

    Now he's decided to throw his weight behind some of his favourite bands.

    Elba has set up his own label, 7Wallace Music and his first signing is French-Cameroonian artist and Diddy associate James BKS.

    The 45-year-old told Billboard, external: “James is a rare find. His hip-hop sensibilities transfer to the other music he makes, he’s a nice person to work with and is gonna be a strong artist for the future.

    "It’s a huge move for 7Wallace, a small indie label."

    A small indie label with a millionaire boss, mind.

    James BKS’ debut single Kwlele is set for release next month.

  18. Garbage's Shirley Manson opens up about self-harmpublished at 10:10 BST 4 July 2018

    The Scots singer has been speaking frankly about her history with self-harm, depression, and imposter syndrome

    Speaking to The New York Times, external, Shirley goes into great detail about how she began self-harming as a teenager, whilst in a toxic relationship.

    In the article, entitled: The First Time I Cut Myself, she wrote: “I suddenly felt I was part of something much bigger than this stupid situation I had found myself in.

    "To my mind, my life had just immediately become more grand and expansive.

    The problem of course with any practice of self-harm is that once you choose to indulge in it, you get better, more efficient, at it.

    She goes on to explain that the self-harming stopped when she left the relationship but the urge returned years later while on tour with her band Garbage.

    "I was under immense physical and mental pressure. I was a media 'it' girl, and as a result I was lucky enough to be invited to grace the covers of newspapers and fashion magazines all over the world.

    Perversely, the downside of attracting so much attention was that I began to develop a self-consciousness about myself... I was suffering from extreme 'impostor syndrome', constantly measuring myself against my peers.

    She adds: "Mercifully, most likely because of the rigorous demands of touring and an understanding that cutting myself was not something I really wanted to get back into, I managed to resist the compulsion to harm myself again."

    The London grime star has been released on bail, external and is set to face trial on 20 July, after his arrest for possession of a knife last month in his car in east London.

    Despite being allowed home, he is no longer set to perform at this weekend's Wireless Festival in London's Finsbury Park.

    Wireless posted: “Due to unforeseen circumstances J Hus will no longer be performing.”

    He's been replaced on the bill by rappers Krept & Konan, who last weekend treated crowds at TRNSMT in Glasgow to a cover of Big Shaq's Man's Not Hot.

    Richard Swift, a former member of The Shins and touring bassist with The Black Keys, has died, aged 41.

    A Facebook post confirmed his death, external saying: "And all the angels sing 'Que Sera Sera' Richard Ochoa Swift March 16, 1977 - July 3, 2018."

    The musician and singer-songwriter was last month admitted to hospital with an undisclosed life-threatening condition.

    The Black Keys' singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach led tributes on Instagram saying: "Today the world lost one of the most talented musicians I know.

    "He’s now with his Mom and Sister. I will miss you my friend."
