Following Tuesday's announcement that the BBC is to close the legendary Maida Vale Studios, musicians have taken to social media urging the BBC to rethink the decision.

Geoff Barrow of Portishead, tweeted a new hashtag, external #BBCSaveMaidaVale with the message:

"Artist/band/musician/DJ/MusicFan please use this hash tag to tell the BBC they are wrong to close down The historic Maida Vale Studio and replace it with a new building."

Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich agrees, calling the decision "absolutely insane, wrong, misguided".

The BBC's director general Tony Hall announced the closure, saying the complex would be replaced by a new, state-of-the-art facility in east London.

The move means the BBC will "be able to record and broadcast more live music than ever before," he added.

  3. Kiefer Sutherland: Music 'was a great way to make friends'published at 15:41 BST 6 June 2018

    BBC 6 Music

    Media caption,

Matt chats to Kiefer Sutherland about music, touring and the very start of his career.

"I had a red light in my room, so I was already into setting the mood."

Actor and musician Kiefer Sutherland has been recalling how he got started in music, aged 10.

He told 6 Music's Matt Everitt, "In the beginning, I wanted to be able to do it so badly... my theory at that point was not as advanced as my desire."

Kiefer made his debut at Glastonbury last year. He's wanted to play there since he was 24.

  4. Dave Grohl plays the crowd in Swedenpublished at 15:26 BST 6 June 2018

Now you see me, now you don't.

Yet more high jinks - this time courtesy of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

Three years after the singer and musician famously broke his leg during a concert in Sweden, our Dave re-enacted the mis-timed tumble in Gothenburg - the scene of the crime.

    Or so it appeared.

As the band kicked off the Swedish leg of their tour at Gothenburg's Ullevi stadium, a fake Grohl emerged from the wings and seemingly fell headlong off the stage - to the (brief) horror of the (let's face it, fairly gullible) crowds.

But wait, who is this appearing on the stage? Step forward the real Mr Grohl - on two legs...

Will Smith just can't resist taking the mick out of his son, Jaden.

In February, he released a parody video for Jaden's track Icon, complete with a gold barnet and dodgy teeth, to celebrate the single's 100m streams.

The new verse (about one minute in - watch below) includes the lines: 'You know why you was an icon living/ You was born from an icon living/Messed around, married me an icon living...then we made some icon children.'

Smith Snr's cheeky invention concludes: 'One day I'm gonna hand you all the icon billing/and I'm gonna be an icon chillin'.'

"I’ve been wanting to get on this FOREVER!!" Dad Smith wrote on Instagram. "You Smashed this one, Jaden!"

Croydon could be the next Nashville.

Yes, you heard it here first.

Not content with having given the world 2014 X Factor winner Ben Haenow (we hear he has a big following in South Africa...), local councillors are now looking at how to turn the south London borough into a music destination in its own right.

Next week, councillors will meet to discuss how to turn Croydon into a music city to rival Tennessee's capital of country music .

Proposals include developing local music venues, establishing new festivals and a possible music production hub.

"Strengthening Croydon's growing reputation as a destination for innovative arts and culture is part of our ambition to make the borough a great place to live, work and do business," said Councillor Oliver Lewis.

To be fair, Stormzy grew up in nearby Thornton Heath, and he's well famous.

In fact, he once vowed to be "the biggest thing to ever come out of Croydon". Sorry Ben.

"You look at Croydon and no one ever breaks out from the crowd," Stormzy told the Croydon Advertiser in 2015.

"Hopefully, people can now see me and it will inspire them."

He now lives in London. Just sayin'.

    Image caption,

Prince, pictured in 1986, a year before the Black Album was slated for release

A rare copy of Prince's Black Album - one of the most sought-after vinyl records of all time - has been discovered in Canada.

The album was slated for release in 1987 before Prince had a "spiritual epiphany" and demanded it be destroyed.

Five pristine copies surfaced in the US last year, with one selling for $42,298 (£31,500).

Now another edition, only the ninth in existence, has been found.

"It was a top security release," Jeff Gold, a former big cheese at Warner Bros who worked with Prince, told BBC Music's Mark Savage.

"There was no single, there was no video, there was no announcement. Nobody knew it was coming.

"So when Prince decided it could not come out, it was relatively easy for the people at Warner Bros to say, 'Alright, destroy every one'. And I mean every single one.

For which Prince footed the bill: "He paid for over half-a-million copies to be destroyed out of his own royalties."

No surprise that the album became one of the most bootlegged records of all time.

So, if you have a spare 30 grand...

    Quote Message

"There are a lot of very, very serious Prince collectors and supply is greatly exceeded by demand. I think it'll sell quickly."

Bill Murray performs at London's Southbank CentreImage source, Reuters

Actor and comic Bill Murray showed off his "frustrated rock star" according to the Guardian's somewhat damning review, external of the Hollywood star's musical debut in London on Tuesday.

Critic John Lewis called it "a curious and uniquely pointless evening, in all the best and the worst ways".

The show, a musical exploration of American culture and identity, sees Murray intoning works by Mark Twain and Leonard Bernstein accompanied by a trio of musicians including cellist Jan Vogler.

    Quote Message

For a skilled comic, his timing was all over the place. He rushed through songs, often nearly a whole beat ahead of the rest of the band

    John Lewis, Guardian

But the audience lapped it up - giving the Groundhog Day star five standing ovations. And other reviews were more forgiving with Clive Davis, in The Times, calling it "a masterclass in physical humour".

So neither the highs of Ghostbusters or the lows of Rock the Kasbah. More or a 'divides the crowd' Rushmore moment.

Those wanting to decide for themselves, can catch him in Edinburgh on 18 June.
